I specialize in women's issues, particularly trauma including sexual abuse/assault, sex trafficking, domestic violence, and overall life transitions such as pregnancy, parenting, college adjustment, and divorce.
Lotus Counseling started with a vision of empowering girls and women to become their best selves. The lotus flower grows from deep mud, through murky water, to produce a beautiful blossom; the more adversity the more beautiful a transformation. My role as a counselor is to provide support and guidance along that journey. Everyone is an individual and therefore there is no one approach that works for everyone. I pride myself on being genuine with my clients and utilizing counseling methods that are most effective for her as an individual.

Over 5 years as inpatient pediatric psychotherapist at Children's of Alabama: Children's Behavioral Health-Inpatient Units and Psychiatric Emergency (PIRC), serving children from 3-19 and their caregivers; parenting, women's issues, child/adolescent therapy, pre- and post-adoption: adoptees and adopters, weight issues, identity - professional and personal, work/life balance
We are the generation raised by parents of the 50s, 60s, and 70s. We were pushed into college and graduate school because our parents worked so hard for us to have the freedom to get higher education and “professional” careers, so we better not forget or squander their sacrifices, right? We entered the workforce in droves as doctors, accountants, nurses, bankers, therapists, business owners, IT specialists, lawyers, clergy, teachers, social workers, etc., and lost who we are at our core.

Counseling is much more than problem solving. It's an opportunity to acknowledge your strengths and build on them to help prepare for life's challenges, big and small. I believe that first and foremost, successful counseling is built on trust and connection. Many people who struggle are reluctant to reach out. If you are seeking help you've taken an important first step.

Many of my clients come to therapy after enduring the rollercoaster of intense emotional highs and lows, searching for ways to learn new coping strategies or enhance the ones they already have. These individuals often struggle with challenges such as self-harm, suicidality, addiction, eating disorders, OCD, PTSD, anxiety, or depression. Despite their unique struggles, they share a common goal: to not only gain better control of their emotions but also to create a meaningful life they want to live, rather than merely survive.

Women's Issues Therapists

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
