Carol Adams, LCSW, has trained both nationally and internationally in the fields of Trauma, Eating Disorders, Addictions, Women's Issues, and Depression/Anxiety. Emphasis is placed on the connection between mind and body, as physical illness may sometimes be a manifestation of our psychological state. She integrates mind, body and emotion, so that clients come to experience more harmony and wholeness. In her experience, "we all have within us an enormous potential to heal. We learn to utilize our own inner resources to achieve and maintain a sense of balance, clarity and well-being."

Interpersonal issues (relationship problems, boundaries, borderline personality-related issues, codependency, communication skills) and existential issues (identifying values, finding meaning/purpose, exploring spirituality) are also focus areas.
I believe change is hard, and therapy is an endeavor that takes courage, but it's also an opportunity for growth, healing, and moving forward. If you've never been, therapy may appear intimidating, but it's really just a process of identifying areas to work on, developing goals, and then working toward those goals. It's awesome getting to work with people who are ready to start the process of change and experience the emotional, spiritual, and relational growth that happens as a result. Some of the areas I work with clients on are anxiety, depression, trauma, couples therapy, borderline personality disorder, boundaries, and others.

I bring an element of spirituality in a calming and trusting environment.
I have always had a passion for helping others. In my practice I help my clients to achieve the proper tools and acquire the proper resources to overcome their challenges. Typically, a client needs to be reminded of their own strengths, wisdom, and to realize their own healing power. My motto is "Helping to build your Tree of Life." A person has roots and the behaviors branch out to support our decisions and actions. By building a firm and sturdy root system a person can support their branches and their buds will bloom into beautiful fruit and flowers.

My specialty areas: individuals, couples/families, coping skills, caring for the caregivers/life transitions, grief/loss, identity/orientation, spirituality/religious concerns/abuse, transitions in parenting (ex: adolescents to college).
Every person is unique because you bring your own history with you. While our past is always present, it doesn't have to dictate our future. Whether I am seeing an individual, couple or family, I know we bring with us the people who are part of our stories and it is a privilege to hear yours and understand what matters most in your life. I believe there is hope for changing patterns that may not be working, healing for relationships with others and ourselves and recovering from past and present emotional wounds. I would value your trust if you choose to work with me. Support is available.

I am a Christian and can integrate spirituality into counseling, but only if you feel comfortable and invite it into the process.
Let’s talk about how you’re REALLY doing. You may be dealing with anxiety, depression, life transitions, or relationship struggles. You’re trying to hold it all together, but you need help. Whether you’re in need of emotional support or trying to revive a relationship, the work is the same: helping you uncover what you need, why it matters, and how to communicate it in a way that feels true to you.

I’ll help you find the space where spirituality and therapy exist in harmony.
There's an energy in your body that never seems to settle. This isn't an exciting feeling. This restlessness is daunting. Negative thoughts plague you day in and day out. Prayer brings you some relief, but it's only a matter of time before the mind takes over once again. You've become reactive. The irritability is exhausting. Your thoughts keep you up at night and the sleeplessness fans the intrusive thoughts into a flame. It's a vicious cycle. You're not the best version of yourself. You're craving tranquility, rest, and contentment for your life. You're ready to find your peace.

My areas of focus include trauma (relational, religious, and systemic), spirituality, relationships, child-centered therapy, gender identity and sexuality, shame and self-worth.
I am grateful for the opportunity to walk alongside children, adults, couples, and families as they move toward understanding, healing, and connection. Though everyone deserves a deep sense of love and belonging, sometimes the ways we have learned to protect ourselves create barriers to experiencing these basic human needs. If you would like to heal your relationship with yourself and with those around you, I'm here to help.

While my own spirituality and faith are important to me, I do not impose them on others.
Sometimes we come to places in our lives when we don't know where to turn. At these times, we need someone to walk alongside us as we search. When I am invited to be that person, my role as your counselor is to provide a caring relationship of trust in which you can find healing and hope. I've heard it said, "It is in relationships that we become broken, and it is in relationships that we can find healing." Whether you are an individual, couple or family, I welcome the opportunity to walk alongside you - wherever you are in your journey.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
