Somatic Therapists in Opelika, AL

I want to commend you for being brave and taking an important step towards living a healthier life. There's some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that suffering is not always avoidable, as you probably already know. The good news is that we can find healing and learn to suffer well. People walk through life with unhealthy behaviors, emotional injuries, unproductive beliefs, and other burdens that they shouldn’t have to carry and don’t really need to carry. Using evidence based practices, like EMDR and DBT, I help people heal trauma, find relief from past wounds, have a more fulfilling present, and a more hopeful future.

I have training and experience treating trauma (attachment and somatic focused EMDR) as well as the other surrounding experiences, such as depression and anxiety, that accompany both the hurting and the healing journey.
I consider it an honor to walk with people towards wholeness as he/she/they work on traumas associated with safety/security, identity, family, sexuality, faith (or deconstruction of faith) and unhealthy relationships. It is my hope to help each of my clients live freely, bravely and boldly as their true selves. I meet people where they are and guide them in both identifying and achieving their personal goals moving forward. I recognize the importance of community, connection and safety and help clients to set boundaries and find resources in order for these needs to be met along the way.

I echo these words from Dr. Brené Brown: "When we deny the story, it defines us. When we own the story, we can write a brave new ending." I enjoy working as a team with my clients to create new endings through understanding personal narratives, pin-pointing sources blocking growth, and identifying steps towards achieving desired outcomes. I provide a relatable, empathic, creative, and professional environment. Because each person holds unique qualities and circumstances, I work to holistically understand clients and tailor the counseling experience around clients' specific needs and desires.

Hi! Please call me Kat. While change can be done alone, it is often fragmented and limited to our self-awareness. I believe that the transformative power that comes from a safe, supportive, and empathic relationship can act as a fertilizer and accelerate personal and transformational growth. It is through connectedness and relationships that we can see our blind spots, discover our incongruences, and get in contact with our more authentic selves. Pursuing change in a vacuum can often leave us in a feedback loop. We may need help to redirect our focus and energy towards a more productive path.

I am also trained in Somatic and Attachment Focused (S.A.F.E.) EMDR, a model that considers how trauma affects an individual’s ability to regulate the nervous system and to connect with others.
It has been wisely said that we are wounded in relationship AND we heal in relationship. This therapeutic relationship is an invitation for you to safely engage your internal experience and connect with what you most need or want for yourself. Out of our wounding, we develop patterns that emerge to help us navigate our environments. These patterns can also keep us from being fully present to our lives, leaving us feeling stuck, exhausted, anxious, ashamed, depressed, and lonely. My approach to therapy is led by kindness and curious exploration, supporting you as the client to identify the genuine longings under these patterns.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is often incorporated into therapy sessions, along with dialectical behavioral therapy, somatic therapy, and solution-focused brief therapy.
There are times in life when we might be faced with trials, transitions, loss, or other concerns. During these times, it might be difficult to reach out to someone, but you are not alone. In reaching out and venturing into mental health therapy, you may set yourself into forward goal movement, possible breakthroughs, and mental health well-being.

My therapeutic approach is grounded in Somatic Experiencing, Lifespan Integration, and Internal Family Systems.
Our time together will differ from traditional talk therapy. With Somatic Experiencing, we pay attention to bodily sensations, learn how to regulate emotions, & resolve traumatic symptoms. Lifespan Integration utilizes various protocols to resolve trauma, increase insight into patterns/behaviors, & create a coherent life narrative & stronger sense of self.

Somatic Therapists
How does somatic therapy work?
Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.
Is EMDR a somatic therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.
Is somatic therapy evidence-based?
Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.
What is somatic trauma therapy?
Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
