In my practice, I tend to work with individuals facing issues such as anxiety, depression, inner criticism,
codependency
, and relational distress.
I am an Associate Licensed Counselor under the supervision of Glenn Hollingsworth; and as a counselor, it's my passion to come alongside individuals who seek to deepen their self-awareness and cultivate healthier long-lasting relationships. A foundational belief I hold is that we are created for relationships, and those relationships can shape or break us. With that being said, I believe the sacred relationship between client and therapist has the ability to offer profound opportunities for both healing and transformation. My primary goal in treatment is to make sure every person walks away from session feeling seen and heard.

My areas of interest are substance abuse,
codependency
, relationship issues, young adults, interventions, relapse, anxiety, and depression.
The problem is not just the overuse of alcohol, drugs, pills or food. It's not too much work, exercise, spending, gambling, or social media. The problem is the "PAIN", and if the pain is not healed, the addiction will continue. We all go through difficult times. Counseling has been proven to help. I have 25 years of experience in the field of addiction/
codependency
counseling and coaching. I have successfully worked with hundreds of individuals, couples and families affected by addiction issues and other forms of destructive behaviors.

Why try therapy? Because you deserve it. You deserve to be listened to, to be understood and not told to "just snap out of it". You deserve to take care of yourself, to feel good about yourself and to believe that you matter. You deserve to learn ways to manage and deal with depression, anxiety, the past, addictive behaviors, negative self-talk, feelings of worthlessness, and/or overwhelming life issues so that they do not dominate and control your life.

Every person has an inherent need to feel seen, heard, and understood. When these critical needs aren't met, it's common for coping mechanisms that are both ineffective and self-destructive to take shape, which can then lead to feelings of frustration, isolation, and a sense of being "stuck." Whether your negative feelings manifest themselves as anxiety, depression, impulsive behaviors, addiction, or the inability to connect with others, navigating these struggles alone can be overwhelming. No matter how helpless you may feel, it's important to know that you're not alone. Finding healing and freedom is possible!

I am a humanistic therapist, working from an attachment based perspective. As a humanist I believe in combining a non-judgmental and supportive environment with intellectual curiosity to work with you as a whole person, thoughts and feelings. In our relationship, I believe we are partners working together to determine root causes and patterns to find the best way forward. I am not the expert on you nor do I strive to be. I look forward to talking with you – not at you. I strive to understand you – not judge you. I have a Masters Degree from Columbia university and close to 20 years of experience in the field of mental health.

The pressure to quickly achieve your goals have you overwhelmed. A few thoughts flow in and out: "I'm a failure", "I'm not enough", "everyone is judging me". You attempt by starting the day with enthusiasm. Yet, soon find yourself shifting from forced enthusiasm to doubt, shame, and restlessness. Your fatigue makes seemingly impossible to think clearly or address responsibilities. As time passes, you have sleepless nights, meaningless relationships, and self-doubt. Overthinking steals the slightest calm you may have had. Forcing yourself to 'do better', leaving no room to learn who you truly want to be.

What therapy types help with codependency problems?
Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.
What happens in therapy for codependency?
Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.
How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?
Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.
What is the goal of therapy for codependency?
One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
