Life isn’t always easy. Especially when others are unable to relate to what you feel and experience. You want compassion. It's hard to be your true self around others for fear of judgment. Society wants you to fit into a nice little box and it makes it impossible to be who you are. You can be surrounded by family and loved ones who care about you and want the world for you, yet you feel so lonely and isolated. Sometimes it feels like no one understands you and never will. The pain may seem unbearable. You struggle with so many personal concerns and just want someone who can relate to you with the experience to help.

After almost 30 years as an attorney, I decided to make a change. I find meaning and purpose in helping others make sense of life’s circumstances and find a direction that feels authentic. I believe in meeting clients where they are and working towards realistic, achievable goals. Change can be hard. However, when change matches your true self, it is priceless.

Telling your struggles takes a great deal of courage. I have been inspired by the journeys we are all required to take. Carl Jung stated, "who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes." In my work I help individuals begin the healing process to reclaim the power that has been lost., and in building coping skills. This involves the risk of examing who you are, where you come from, and where you hope to go. I specialize in chemical addiction, sexual addiction, families, and couples. I also have extensive experience with men's issues, including relationship coaching, shame reduction, and relapse prevention.

However, through 17 years in the addiction field, I understand that substance use is only a symptom of an underlying problem.
I have over 17 years of counseling experience working with adults and adolescents. My passion is helping people recover, whether from addiction, anxiety, depression, PTSD, codependency, negative self-image, or divorce. I understand that parenting, relationship issues, life transitions, and grief can be difficult to navigate. I believe healing happens in community and no one should ever feel alone.

I love teaching and I love watching a light bulb come on for someone. But sitting with someone, talking through what they are experiencing as a whole person, heart, soul, mind, and body, is something else entirely. I get to be a container they can pour their hearts into while they sift through everything going on. I get to be curious about them and kind toward them. And then I get to watch, over time, as something deeper than the light bulb changes: their relationship to themselves and to other people becomes something new. Not only do I get to see others change, but I have my own therapist and enjoy the changes I am seeing.

I believe that a client’s life is a journey towards the best version of themselves. That journey, however, is not without challenges that allow a client to take a deeper look into why they make certain choices. My approach looks at the connection between one's thoughts, feelings, and actions in past situations while helping a client reach the desired outcomes in the future. My 20+ years of experience have afforded me opportunities to work with individuals of all ages and needs. My passion, however, has been with clients struggling to find themselves, make sense of the world around them, and create healthy relationships with others.

My ideal client is someone navigating the impact of trauma—especially interpersonal violence—and is ready to begin healing. They may feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure how to move forward, but they’re seeking change. Whether struggling with anxiety, relationships, low self-worth, or big emotions, they’re open to learning and exploring their story with curiosity. They want safety, clarity, and connection—and they’re ready to take the first step.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
