I specialize in trauma and PTSD using Lifespan Integration (LI), a gentle, neuroscience-informed approach that helps your brain reprocess past experiences without retraumatization. I work extensively with several populations with a high concentration on Veterans and First Responders and their families, as well as individuals struggling with sexual dysfunction, problematic sexual behaviors, infidelity, and betrayal. My approach is direct, nonjudgmental, and focused on creating lasting change—not just symptom relief.

I work with adults and teens who need help with anxiety, depression, OCD, trauma & PTSD, relationship issues, grief, self-esteem, and life transitions. Often when people come to see me, they’ve been struggling for a long time on their own and have been through really painful and difficult experiences in their lives. Many times there is a lot of shame and guilt involved in their situations. People feel stuck or that they’re unable to move forward in life. They are looking for an objective, caring person who can help them understand the underlying causes of their symptoms and give them the tools they need to heal and move forward.

Hello, my name is Clarita Requena-Layton, I am a seasoned Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Alaska. My passion lies in guiding individuals towards embracing change and leading lives that are genuine, liberated, and filled with purpose. I use an eclectic approach to providing therapy, because I have come to understand that the challenges faced by those seeking assistance often run much deeper and are far more intricate than they initially appear. It is often what lies beneath the surface symptoms that holds the true root of their pain and disconnection.

Life is the ultimate teacher, and in my case, it sparked my passion for helping and guiding people who have experienced trauma, struggling with chronic pain, sleep and/or other mental health conditions. After serving two decades in military medicine pivoting to becoming a psychologist as my second career post-retirement seemed to be a natural choice, given my desire to help others and the growing need that I saw every day. My hope is to be able to help make the lives of others better through care and compassion that fits their needs and goals. Human beings are not one size fits all so why should therapy be?

My ideal clients are adults who feel overwhelmed by anxiety, depression, grief, trauma-related symptoms, or mood instability and want real support, not judgment. Many come in feeling stuck, emotionally exhausted, disconnected from themselves, or unsure how to move forward. Together, we make sense of what they’re experiencing, understand how it shows up in both mind and body, and build practical tools that help them feel more grounded, stable, and hopeful.

I founded Chaos Therapy around a simple but radical idea: life is chaotic, and the goal isn't to eliminate the chaos but to find the order within it. If you've been told you're too much, too complicated, too sensitive, too far gone, you are exactly who I built this practice for. I'm not your typical therapist, and that's by design. With over 20 years in social services, I've worked alongside people in some of the most demanding, complex, and overlooked corners of human experience: inpatient and in-home therapy, homeless outreach, and academic research. That breadth isn't just my résumé, it's shaped how I think about healing.

How does cognitive processing therapy work?
A CPT therapist helps a client evaluate their thoughts about the trauma they experienced, focusing on maladaptive or self-blaming thoughts that can exacerbate symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, or depression. The therapist will work with a client to help them learn to challenge such thoughts and consider different perspectives. The therapist is also likely to ask a client to work on these techniques at home between meetings, such as writing an account of their trauma that can be read aloud during a future session.

What is cognitive processing therapy for PTSD?
Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy primarily used in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to treat individuals who experienced abuse or violence, who survived natural disasters, who were first responders to such incidents, or who otherwise experienced trauma.

How long does cognitive processing therapy last?
CPT is a short-term therapy. Whether conducted one-on-one or in a group, a complete set of CPT sessions typically includes 12 weekly sessions, along with tasks for clients to complete at home, although this can vary depending on a client’s needs or a therapist’s particular treatment plan. Sessions typically last 60 or 90 minutes.

How effective is cognitive processing therapy?
A large body of research supports the use of CPT to treat people experiencing PTSD, finding it to be effective among different age groups, either in one-on-one therapy sessions or in a group therapy environment. Research suggests that although the initial sessions may be difficult, clients tend to begin to feel positive progress after the first few sessions, and that the benefits tend to last well after the therapy ends.
