I understand you are questioning and even struggling with sexuality, spirituality , anger, fear, grief and loss, and codependency in romantic, platonic, professional, and familial relationships.
My ideal client is one that perhaps is dealing with feelings of fear, anger, envy, uncertainty, depression, perhaps amplified by strong religious convictions and spiritual uncertainty. They are particularly uncomfortable with being vulnerable often negligent in discussing feelings and issues of religion and spirituality , but will allow a few conversations to explore what their particular and specific issues and beliefs may be, including past traumas and sexual abuse issues. This client would be open to exploring their spirituality (not religion) as a means of developing and improving coping skills and spiritual strategies.

Accepting New Clients! Events, whether negative or positive, can be critical in the lives of many. Existential problems can be seen in loneliness, end-of-life, grief and loss, systemic oppressions or many responsibilities effecting your value system. The religious and spiritual perspective is an important role in the healing process. Many individuals rely on their religion and spirituality during difficult life transitions. Counseling can create a foundation to conceptualize struggles and clarifying values. I’m aware of how prayer can assist with reducing psychological distress.

While my own spirituality and faith are important to me, I do not impose them on others.
Sometimes we come to places in our lives when we don't know where to turn. At these times, we need someone to walk alongside us as we search. When I am invited to be that person, my role as your counselor is to provide a caring relationship of trust in which you can find healing and hope. I've heard it said, "It is in relationships that we become broken, and it is in relationships that we can find healing." Whether you are an individual, couple or family, I welcome the opportunity to walk alongside you - wherever you are in your journey.

Traumatic events or issues with family, relationship and work can lead to depression, chronic anxiety, grief and PTSD. Resultantly, the quality of life deteriorates. Psychotherapy (counseling) enables you to explore your cognitive and emotional sides. It involves connecting your past wounds and present emotions. Psychodynamic therapy enables you to go beyond managing your present emotions and go to the source. I have explored and had many diversified experiences in Spirituality which is important in terms of your present and past experiences. Are you where you would like to be in relation to your career, family, health, education, or spirituality ? Has your life become slightly, or significantly out of balance? I welcome the opportunity to use the skills that I have attained in counseling to help others “take back their pen” for years to come.
Welcome! I’m Courtney Benjamin, and I am a licensed professional counselor, and owner of Benjamin Counseling and Consulting, LLC. I believe that people are born with enormous potential! That being said, sometimes situations occur in our lives which directly or indirectly impact the pace at which one may reach that potential. When people are able to identify at what point they stopped being an author in their lives, they can go back, pick up the pen, and begin re-writing their story. It is for this reason that I offer individual, family, and couples' therapy sessions, to aid individuals in this endeavor.

I discuss faith and spirituality with clients as they seem relevant to the client's development and the issues the client brings to counseling.
Most of us arrive at times when we can benefit from talking with a knowledgeable person who can listen with the objective of helping us to understand ourselves. My goal as a counselor is to help each person know and accept themselves. When I can provide that kind of counseling relationship, clients are much more likely to find their own strengths and wisdom. By listening with compassion and empathy, rather than judgment, I am more likely to help clients find greater harmony and peace in their relationships.

My specialty areas: individuals, couples/families, coping skills, caring for the caregivers/life transitions, grief/loss, identity/orientation, spirituality /religious concerns/abuse, transitions in parenting (ex: adolescents to college).
Every person is unique because you bring your own history with you. While history is important, it doesn't have to dictate our future. Whether I am seeing an individual, couple or family, I know we bring with us the people who are part of our stories and it is a privilege to hear yours and hear what matters most in your life. I believe there is hope for changing patterns that may not be working, healing for relationships with others and ourselves and recovering from past and present emotional wounds. I would value your trust if you choose to work with me. Support is available.

My orientation is towards helping clients experience at the deepest level possible those beliefs and emotional stances which color every moment of their lives, even if unconsciously, and which give rise to the variety of circumstances and interactions of daily life. "Problems" are viewed in the context of the whole life, and seen as signs that a once-creative solution is now blocking the full expression of vitality, meaning, and one's most fundamental nature. Change is possible only on the foundation of a precise and honest experience of oneself marked by warmth and acceptance.

Though I have specific training in relationship issues (such as marriage, pre-marriage, same-sex unions, parenting, infidelity, and in-law issues), I also work a great deal with individuals. I offer specific forgiveness training that has proven extremely helpful in healing grievances and resentments; and am trained in the use of EMDR. When motivated, there is no limit to the potential for improved relationships, personal fulfillment, and peace. In work with couples, I see great improvement when there is deep motivation. And it is part of my job to foster, and nurture that motivation in each partner.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
