Male Therapists in Auburn, AL
I work with folks who are feeling lost. Lots of things can make us feel this way: Excessive stress, life transitions, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, self-judgement, trauma responses, suicidal thoughts... The list could go on. What these experiences have in common is they get in the way of us being the version of ourselves that we want to be. Another thing they have in common? They don't have to stay in our way.

Making sense of life's troubles is challenging for all of us. Because we are fearfully and wonderfully made, all of us are unique and important. But we are also broken. And that brokenness can be spiritual, mental, or physical-likely a combination of all three. My goal as a counselor is to provide compassionate care for the whole person using the truths of the Bible and modern therapies to bring help and hope for life's difficulties.

Currently Accepting New Clients: Does it seem like no matter how hard you try, communication with your partner remains a struggle? You might look like the ideal couple to others, but behind closed doors, you’re both feeling defeated, frustrated, and on the verge of giving up. Or maybe you're feeling the weight of all of life's pressures and painful things you've been through, and can't quite figure out how to be the man you're trying to be. I understand how painful it can be to navigate these feelings of disconnection and uncertainty. The anxiety of not knowing if things will ever improve can be overwhelming.

I want to support both of you in maneuvering the journey ahead, helping you find the tools and skills to improve communication patterns and conflict resolution and regain a sense of togetherness.
It's hard to believe that you're in this position. You once thought you were a perfect couple. Now you find yourself in a relationship with difficulty and conflict at every step. You have so many conflicting feelings that you don't know what to do. How did we get to this? What do we do now? I love them so much, but I can hardly stand to look at them. I want to go to my person, but they are the ones that hurt me. Then you remember the added stress outside the relationship - family, social, work, and financial. Can we ever recover from this?

Integrating cognitive, emotional, and nervous system based techniques, I provide practical tools to mange symptoms and help do the work needed to bring healing.
I want to commend you for being brave and taking an important step towards living a healthier life. There's some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that suffering is not always avoidable, as you probably already know. The good news is that we can find healing and learn to suffer well. People walk through life with unhealthy behaviors, emotional injuries, unproductive beliefs, and other burdens that they shouldn’t have to carry and don’t really need to carry. Using evidence based practices, like EMDR and DBT, I help people heal trauma, find relief from past wounds, have a more fulfilling present, and a more hopeful future.

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
