The challenges and difficulties of life can cause a person to feel defeated, hurt, and overwhelmed. Having no one to understand the heartache, frustration, and worries is tiring. Sometimes the only way to get through life is to hide away in a safe space while struggling to make it through another day. That safe space has caused you to feel trapped and miserable in a dark place, wondering what your purpose for living is. You are tired of feeling judged and not heard when you have taken the risk to share your story with others. Instead, you just wish someone would stop and listen without judgement to your story and offer some hope.

I see therapy as a partnership—we’ll set goals that matter to you and adjust them as your needs change. My role is to give you support and tools so you can keep moving toward the life you want, even when things feel hard. I use different therapeutic modalities like CBT, Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing and Dialectical Behavior therapy (DBT) as well as other treatment models. I I would need to ask you more detailed questions to determine what could help you best. I would want to know generally how would feel different once you achieve your treatment goals.

Hi, I am Erma Croom. My path to becoming a therapist began with my own healing journey. Through personal experience, I came to understand the deep pain that can accompany mental health challenges—and the transformative power of compassionate support. This lived insight ignited a passion to challenge the stigma surrounding mental health, especially within underserved and marginalized communities. Over time, that passion evolved into a calling: to create and facilitate healing spaces where individuals and communities feel safe, seen, and empowered.

I believe therapy works best when you feel safe enough to be honest. My communication style is compassionate, empowering, and nonjudgmental. I strive to create a space where you can speak your truth openly, without fear of being misunderstood or criticized. At the same time, I value direct honesty and gentle accountability because real change often comes from being both supported and challenged in healthy ways. I take a strength-based, person-centered approach, meaning we focus on what is already working for you while building new tools to help you move forward.

Late-evening therapy for busy, overwhelmed adults! Many of the people I work with are adults who feel emotionally overwhelmed, misunderstood, or stuck in the same patterns no matter how much insight they have. They may struggle with ADHD, anxiety, or past relational hurt and often describe feeling “too much,” overthinking everything, or having a hard time feeling secure in close relationships. I specialize in working with adults with ADHD and individuals navigating attachment wounds and relational pain, whether that stems from romantic relationships, family dynamics, or early emotional experiences.

Reaching out for help takes courage, and for some that first step is weighted with anxiety. My goal as a counselor is to be a compassionate listener in a safe space, where the client is free to identify healthy/unhealthy behaviors, manage stress/anxiety and learn how to protect their mental space.

I see you. You’ve been carrying so much for a long time, and it’s time to set some of it down. Imagine a space where you don’t have to hide parts of yourself, where your feelings are honored, and your story is safe. You deserve rest, support, room to breathe, and a chance to hear your own voice again. In this space, you don’t have to be strong or perform, but rather be you and find you. You’re not alone. You can do this. Let’s walk this journey together.

My ideal client is a woman navigating multiple demands, relationship challenges and life transitions. Juggling multiple roles leave them feeling overwhelmed, anxious and disconnected from their authentic selves. These women want to be in an empowering space where they can explore challenges, reconnect with themselves and strive through their lives.

FAQ - Black and African American Counselling
As an African American, why might I wish to see a therapist who is African American?
Working with an African American therapist can often mean that you start from a place of shared understanding with a therapist rather than having to explain your experience from scratch. A therapist who shares your racial identity is more likely to understand the specific pressures shaping your mental health, including navigating racism, cultural identity, and the overall experience of being Black in the United States. They are also more likely to understand the role that family, community, and cultural expectations play in your life without requiring a lengthy explanation. This shared foundation can create a greater sense of safety in the therapeutic relationship and make it easier to open up at the start of therapy.

Are there Black therapists who specialize in working with Black men or Black women?
Yes, many Black therapists have specific experience working with Black men or Black women. While therapists who work with Black clients broadly address concerns relevant to all genders, like anxiety or depression, those with a gender-specific focus are equipped to work with you on the particular ways that race and gender may intersect. For example, some therapists may specialize in working with Black women on topics like body image or maternal mental health, while other therapists may work with Black men on topics such as relationships or masculinity.

Do Black therapists offer marriage and couples counseling?
Yes, many Black therapists are trained in couples and marriage counseling and can work with partners navigating a wide range of relationship challenges. Therapists who identify as Black may have a better understanding of the cultural dynamics surrounding marriage, family roles, and conflict that are specific to African American communities and can work with you and your partner without making assumptions about your background.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with Black clients?
The initial consultation, which is typically a brief phone or video call, is the right time to raise a therapist’s experience working with Black clients. You can ask specific questions, such as "Do you have experience working with Black clients?" or more broad questions, such as "How do you approach cultural identity in your practice?". During the initial consultation, you can also ask whether they have undertaken training in cultural competence and how they would handle a situation where a cultural misunderstanding arose in therapy. A therapist who responds to these questions thoughtfully and without defensiveness is a good sign they are equipped to work with you effectively.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Black therapists?
The directory of Black therapists includes therapists who have self-identified their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profile, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. In situations where the number of therapists who have identified as Black is limited, the directory will also show therapists who have undergone specific multicultural training or have extensive experience working with clients from relevant cultural backgrounds.
