I consider it a great honor to walk with you in your journey. I approach therapy and counseling through a trauma-informed, attachment based lens. Prior to pursuing a career in counseling, I spent 25 years in the field of physical therapy working with those suffering from physical pain. This previous experience in working with those suffering physically has given me insight into how our emotional and physical well-being are two sides of the same coin. Because of this experience, I strive to approach counseling from a holistic perspective paying close attention to the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of each person.

Do you feel stuck in a pattern of undesired behaviors? Certified in EMDR therapy, my approach is to move from the oversimplification of behavioral plans/coping strategies to clients learning to lead their lives with purpose. This can be done by clients exploring parts of themselves that may seem powerless to undesired behaviors. Additionally, I look beyond diagnoses to focus on neurobiology and integration of emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical experiences.

Counseling has been defined as "helping others to help themselves". Our journey in life often takes unexpected and unwanted twists and turns. Sometimes a little help is all that's needed to navigate the obstacles and regain our path. It would be my honor to help you to live the life you desire. Help comes through an offer of a warm, inviting environment with a compassionate, nonjudgmental listener. My role is not to tell you what to do or what to think but to help and to guide. I would love the opportunity to talk with you to assist you on your personal journey.

Adverse experiences in early life, such as trauma, neglect, or abuse, can have long-lasting effects on emotional and social development. These experiences can impact an individual’s ability to form healthy relationships in adulthood. Many adults who have faced such challenges may struggle with trust, intimacy, or communication in their relationships. Unresolved feelings from past experiences can lead to patterns of behavior that hinder relationship-building, such as fear of abandonment, heightened anxiety in social situations, or difficulty expressing emotions.

Life is challenging and learning to navigate it in a healthy manner is key to being happy. Are you just content or satisfied where you are in life or do you want to “reach for the stars” but life has taken the wind out of your sails? I like to meet people where they are and as a counselor help them reach where they want to be mentally. I believe my life experiences have shaped me into a counselor that connects with clients without judgement. Connecting to a counselor is the most important aspect of counseling because without a connection you may not feel comfortable being vulnerable.

Hi, I am Erma Croom. My path to becoming a therapist began with my own healing journey. Through personal experience, I came to understand the deep pain that can accompany mental health challenges—and the transformative power of compassionate support. This lived insight ignited a passion to challenge the stigma surrounding mental health, especially within underserved and marginalized communities. Over time, that passion evolved into a calling: to create and facilitate healing spaces where individuals and communities feel safe, seen, and empowered.

I believe therapy works best when you feel safe enough to be honest. My communication style is compassionate, empowering, and nonjudgmental. I strive to create a space where you can speak your truth openly, without fear of being misunderstood or criticized. At the same time, I value direct honesty and gentle accountability because real change often comes from being both supported and challenged in healthy ways. I take a strength-based, person-centered approach, meaning we focus on what is already working for you while building new tools to help you move forward.

Are you an adult who looks like you have it all together but inside you feel overwhelmed, anxious, or emotionally exhausted? I work with people who are juggling demanding careers, relationship stress, and big life transitions while quietly struggling with anxiety, self-doubt, or burnout. Many of my clients are used to being the “strong one” for everyone else and finally want a place where they can exhale, be honest about what’s going on, and feel understood without judgment. If you’ve been carrying a lot on your own, you don’t have to keep doing that here.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
