My personal journey is a testament to the idea that we are all works in progress. Starting with a passion for molecular biology at MIT and Stanford, I quickly realized that the solitary life of research didn’t match my personality or my desire to work directly with others. From research, I went into teaching, where I worked with gifted and twice-exceptional students whose needs frequently outstripped the available resources (and my skills at that time). That led me to become a clinical psychologist focusing on helping gifted and twice-exceptional clients.
I continue to use the skills and habits of mind that each profession has taught me: observe carefully, generate hypotheses, experiment, look for patterns and converging lines of evidence, and refine ideas over time. My familiarity with different domains helps me design interventions grounded in practical reality as well as theory.
What I love about my profession is the opportunity to work with such a variety of delightful and interesting people, the flexibility to tailor what I do to meet folks’ individual needs, and the possibility of helping my clients grow into joyful lifelong learners.
