What’s up! My name is Jon Davis, and I specialize in working with high school/college students & young adults. I work best with people who are looking to develop ways of breaking negative patterns & find ways to cope in the present day. It’s really easy to get stuck within a loop, or have things change around you and what was working isn’t anymore. I like to work with people around breaking the cycle, and finding effective actions to adapt to the present day. My areas of focus are stress & anxiety management, breaking the depression/burnout cycle, distress tolerance, and finding ways to keep swimming through a chaotic era.

I have a conversational approach and welcome humor alongside the deep emotional work of therapy. I come alongside adults and relationships to support you in your healing and connection mainly through the lens of Attachment Theory, Psychodynamic therapy, and Internal Family Systems, but most importantly, I pull from many wise teachers to find what works for you.

Feelings of loneliness, depression, and isolation are often a surprise when we are surrounded by people at work, home, and in social connections. In over 20 years of practice, I have helped adults and couples to identify and resolve the issues that are obstacles to creating more fulfilling lives and relationships. I bring the qualities of warmth and connection, honesty, sensitivity, creativity, flexibility, humor, clarity and openmindedness, and interactive exchange to sessions. Individual, couples, and group therapy are included in my practice.

I believe that all mental anguish begins with loneliness and disconnection. This is why my approach to psychotherapy is grounded fundamentally in the relationship that we build together. Together we will move through suffering, creatively identifying new possibilities and ways of experiencing life. We will find hope and build your capacity to love both yourself and others more fully. From within this relationship, you will be able to safely try new things, to see what works for you, to ultimately move forward in your life with more ease. I like the expression "human flourishing" to describe this process.

Immediate availability Wednesday and Thursday before 1pm! I believe the most successful outcomes require a good fit between the client and the therapist, and I strive to work collaboratively with clients to help them live a more satisfying and fulfilling life. I understand that every problem is unique, and I enjoy working with complex feelings and situations, making sense of them, and working through them alongside my clients. I approach my work using a client-centered, strengths-based model, and make it a point to check in regarding the progress of treatment.

We live in an absurd world, running into expected narratives about how life should be and how we should feel and think. These experiences can lead to suffering: overwhelm, feelings of isolation, meaninglessness, and permanence, leaving us feeling broken. We cannot change our experiences, but we can change our relationship with those experiences, what they mean, and how we approach them. I have extensive experience working with emotional laborers, adolescents, women, LGBT+ challenges, body and sex/kink positive, identity difficulties, and attachment wounds.

I work with new mothers who are finding the transition to parenthood a bit more shaky than perhaps was expected. I work especially well with folks who crave to break generational patterns, who yearn to be better parents than the ones who've gone before them, and who are fearful at times that they may not be up to the task. I also enjoy and greatly relate to parents with highly sensitive, colicky, or neurodivergent babies/toddlers. If you want to feel calmer, more connected, more creative, and more alive in your parenting... I would love to help you get there.

I am currently accepting individual, adult clients who want to move away from unfulfilling thoughts and beliefs about their sexuality and sensuality. These topics may not have been talked about when you grew up or they were talked about negatively, and now you have discomfort around these topics. But you think, 'There's got to be something that feels better than this. There has to be more.' And up until now, you have been merely existing in this arena and you want to feel alive, fulfilled, and secure with your sexuality and sensuality.

Perhaps you are struggling in a relationship, not able to communicate, or stuck in negative patterns. Drifting apart, you yearn for intimacy and being desired. You wonder if you should go or stay when trust is gone. Or you may need to find your voice and create boundaries. Maybe you're an overachiever or your inner critic has exhausted you, anxiety is finally too much. The relational conflict is starting to affect every area of your life. You are looking for a therapist who can get it and guide you through to the other side.

What is your body telling you? Do you or your child/teen ever have that heart-beating fast, sweaty palms, knees shaking, upset stomach, foggy brain feeling? Ever notice these feelings during social events, big life decisions or transitions, in relationships or in particularly overwhelming environments? Do these sensations ever result in feelings of being discouraged, exhausted and preferring to be alone? These are just a few examples of how our bodies can communicate overwhelm or overstimulation of a lived experience. Our mind-body connection can make a huge impact in our ability to regulate and manage these sensations.

Being open to understanding more about yourself takes courage. You may envision something new, but you don’t know how to get there. There may be an inner struggle of whether you are worthy or deserve to be happy. In counseling you get to be seen and heard for all that you are. With curiosity and warmth, I will listen and support you in identifying what you'd like to shift in your life to bring a sense relief and ease while more closely meeting your needs and living in balance with your values.

Update 4/24: Accepting new clients! I work with young adults and adolescents (15+) who are immigrants, children of immigrants/refugees, LGBTQIA+, BIPOC. As part of these communities, you might feel anxious, depressed, and misunderstood. You might have spent years catering to others that you struggle to understand yourself. You might carry expectations from family and feel caught among cultures. You might be unpacking years of childhood and generational trauma. I see you trying your best and am here to support you in getting back to yourself, your needs, and your values.

As a Native/Indigenous therapist, I work with an understanding that therapy doesn't look the same as the books. I choose to work from a holistic approach, helping treat the whole individual. I make sure to work through a trauma-informed lens, keeping in mind that we all experience trauma differently. Through my private practice work, I aim to work with BIPOC folks like myself and provide a safe, non-judgmental space to help normalize seeking and recieving mental health support in our communities.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Seattle?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
