I have a considerable background working with the African American community & other communities of color, and the LGBTQ & non-binary communities.
Maybe you remember this scene from a movie; picture it, a peaceful airplane ride becomes turbulent. The plane begins losing altitude rapidly. The flight attendant urgently instructs you to "put your oxygen mask on first" before helping others. That simple, but critical statement, is just as important in our everyday lives. Remembering to take time to yourself, non selfishly, can be difficult for anyone who tends to place others' needs first. Together, we'll explore your thoughts, feelings, decisions, choices, wants, and needs in your therapy. I will assist you in" finding your voice" and help you to "put your oxygen mask on first.

Going through difficult and stressful situations without a support system can be challenging. It's normal to struggle with the emotions and feelings that come with significant losses, like the death of a parent, especially when it happens at a young age. Often, we may not recognize this reality. You do not have to face challenging situations by yourself. A source of support such as a therapist is a powerful resource that can assist you in all areas of your life.

Our lives revolve around relationships. The relationship with oneself, family and others can deeply affect our emotions and how we interact with the world around us. In our work together, I foster a safe space in which we can begin to process and understand what's at the root of your troubles. Life is so fast-paced, and I offer an environment in which you can slow down, get in touch with your needs and chart a path forward. I am anchored in a psychodynamic approach, integrating emotionally focused therapy, attachment theory, mindfulness, motivational interviewing, and other modalities based on clients’ needs.

Feeling a bit lost and not quite yourself lately? Brené Brown said: "What we don't need in the midst of struggle is shame for being human." I get how tough it can be when things feel out of control. If you’re struggling with anxiety, trauma, self-esteem concerns, or nervous system dysregulation, I work with you in focusing on your strengths, finding clarity, building strong connections, and helping you feel confident to tackle life's ups and downs.

I have learned a great deal about you by studying your childhood and the choices you make today as an adult. I find that my clients benefit greatly when they understand the root of their behavior by exploring the essential details of their attachment style. By doing so, you put yourself in a better position to heal from trauma and revise your future social interactions. I work with a supervisor who provides me with the best guidance to help my clients heal from trauma and revise their worldviews. Therapy is a process of understanding, and I believe it is essential for both the client and therapist to be curious about one another

They say life is full of highs and lows, but lately you have been experiencing more lows. Life transitions, depression, or anxiety have caused a wedge between you and your peace. Activities that used to excite you no longer matter. You are just floating through life with no purpose or clarity; ultimately negatively affecting your self-esteem and confidence. Whenever you try to get on track and build the life you want, life or your inner thoughts seem to take you two steps backwards. You could give up but the fighter in you will not. You want to build on that determination but don't know where to start? Something has to change.

Taking that first step to contact a therapist can feel overwhelmingly anxiety-inducing. If you are grappling with stress, burnout, or mental exhaustion, you may feel as if you’ve hit a dead end or you can’t see beyond your current struggles. You know that saying, "you can’t see the forest for the trees"? This is the case when you live in your own thoughts. It becomes hard to gain perspective. Discovering, learning and applying practical tools to help you manage your stress and make positive changes in your life is possible.

My work is focused on initiating healing from the moment you walk through my door. And I recognize it takes a lot of courage to be in the room, with me as your therapist, while beginning this journey of deeper understanding of self and change. Together we will look inward at the fragmented pieces of your life, which can often be intimidating, but you won't be made to feel alone in this process. I will help you put the pieces of your life together so you can develop a stronger sense of self.

Congratulations for taking the first step towards change! I utilize many methods with clients during sessions (expressive arts therapy, narrative therapy, trauma focused therapy, positive psychology, videos, worksheets, etc.) Change does take work but it can happen! I sometimes give homework to help my clients achieve their goals. I work with individual adults (18+). Whether it's anxiety, trauma, stress, or a mixture of things, I look forward to working with you!

Black and African American Therapists

As an African American, why might I wish to see a therapist who is African American?

African American clients may seek out African American therapists for several reasons, foremost being a sense of cultural understanding and the possibility of shared experiences. Cultural sensitivity and context on the part of the therapist may make it easier to form a therapeutic alliance and to focus on the work of therapy without the need to explain or educate a therapist on cultural matters. It may also be empowering to work with a therapist who shares one’s racial or ethnic background. It is important to note that a therapist who demonstrates cultural sensitivity can be highly effective even if they do not share a client’s background or race.

Can clients benefit from working with a therapist who shares their race or ethnicity?

Yes, having a therapist who shares a client’s race or ethnicity is often valuable, especially if it fosters a strong therapeutic alliance between the two. While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic effectiveness. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who has an understanding of a client’s background and perhaps also shared life experiences. It should be noted that many clients form a strong bond with their therapist regardless of their race or ethnicity. This is a personal decision, and it depends on the therapist, the client, and the connection between the two.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with African American clients?

Clients can ask therapists directly about their experience working with clients of diverse backgrounds, including with African American individuals. You may wish to inquire whether a therapist has undertaken training in cultural competence broadly, and how specifically they would ensure that their approach is sensitive to the needs of African American clients. Therapy involves honesty and trust, so it’s best for clients to share concerns about their therapist’s cultural competence at the outset. And a good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals based on the concerns you articulate.

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

It’s important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive because everyone comes to therapy with a unique background and set of experiences. Being aware of culture and cultural differences between people is important for understanding clients, as is coming to therapy with an open mind, recognizing that the therapist doesn’t necessarily understand everything and that the client can help guide the way.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Black therapists?

The directory of Black therapists includes therapists who have self-identified their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profile, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. In situations where the number of therapists who have identified as Black is limited, the directory will also show therapists who have undergone specific multicultural training or have extensive experience working with clients from relevant cultural backgrounds.
