Life can feel overwhelming at times. Some might find it difficult to find the emotional courage to seek psychotherapy when you are already dealing with a quagmire of complex competing loyalties, identities, and personal and political conflicts. Whether you are dealing with the stress of racial identity, cultural integration, concerns related to fertility, substance abuse, or transitions throughout the life cycle, this process does not have to be an isolative experience. Carrying around those frustrations with nowhere to process them can further exacerbate difficulties in daily activities.

Change is arduous, but it can be managed through personal assessment, individual reflection, establishing attainable objectives, and investigating new perspectives to repeated challenges that have a significant impact on life. ETC offers a mindfully candid, nonjudgmental and culturally sensitive environment for people of color to work through their adversities and frustrations. Individuals and couples with negative or stigmatized beliefs around emotional issues are encouraged to come in and consider the benefits of integrative counseling.

I’m am very passionate about my work and providing therapy for those seeking help. My primary focus is ensuring that you feel heard, validated, and understood. In my practice, therapy focuses on developing realistic solutions to external stressors while addressing internal conflict. Managing work, school, and relationships is difficult when your mental health is imbalanced and things becomes overwhelming. Though it may be challenging, acknowledging the past is essential to foster healing and personal growth. My goal is to have a safe space for you to seek healing, clarity, and have a listening ear

You are sick of having the same fight. If you don't do it, it won't get done. You've stopped asking because what's the point? You are exhausted and feel like you are the only one trying. You feel taken for granted. You've tried saying it calmly, you've yelled, you've cried...yet you continue to feel stuck. But regardless, it goes in one ear and out the other. You can't even remember how the last fight started or what it was REALLY about. You wonder "Can we work this out?"

I have the privilege of accompanying clients as they go through some of the most painful and some of the most joyous times of their lives. I see therapy as a journey that the client and therapist take together with the therapist playing the role of a traveling companion, guide, and interpreter. I have extensive experience providing counseling services to adolescents, adults, and families in various clinical settings. The focus of treatment includes improving self-image, changing negative self-talk, and working through trauma. My approach is collaborative, working together to define and achieve therapy goals.

I believe therapy can help individuals harness their strengths and improve coping around challenging feelings and experiences; such as a new cancer diagnosis, chronic illness, terminal illness, grief, anxiety, stress, caregiver issues, life transitions and relationship issues. At a time when you might feel disoriented, stuck or uncertain about how to move forward, I can work with you to explore any potential barriers and identify pathways for growth. To facilitate your navigation, I strive to create an environment that feels safe and free from judgment, where you can feel seen and heard.

“Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.” Langston Hughes. The way in which you cope is what makes the difference. We all come from different walks of life and therapy could be intimidating. To talk to someone that doesn’t know you where you come from and then to trust this person with all of your most personal information. Give yourself the grace to obtain the support you need, you deserve to live in peace. I can provide you with the support and effective feedback to assist in the resolution of current problems. I will offer a safe and compassionate environment, patients are encouraged to discover solutions.

Greetings all. My name is Regina Bryan, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 10+ years in mental health counseling. While I'm not wedded to any one particular theoretical model, I like to use an approach that integrates many disciplines to address mental health and psychosocial issues. My focus areas are Depression, Anxiety, SUD, and other forms of emotional/mental distress.

Life's bright spots waxes and wanes, especially if you who have felt invalidated throughout your life and may come from historically marginalized backgrounds. Perhaps your suffering has led to a piqued interest in a commitment to healing and working through life's challenges. My mission is to honor your humanity and work with you if you felt unsafe to be you. and you have one or more marginalized identities. I work with BIPOC and LGBTQA+ people, acculturative stress survivors, people with underlying and chronic medical conditions, and people outside of mainstream faiths.

I'm just a mental health guide. You're the expert on you. You've lived your entire life with all of the context of all of your experiences, relationships etc. When you step into my sessions, you're providing me with a window into that world and I provide you with my clinical interpretation of what I perceive. You're the one that's living in it. It's my job to help you navigate your own mind to get you what you want. Not to shape you into what I believe is best. I'm just the mental health guy.

You've worked tirelessly to achieve success, and you're finally here. You have a lucrative career, a nice home and by all appearances you're living the dream. People look at you and think you have it all together so why don't I feel happy or whole? You feel anxious with a steady stream of negative self-talk. You've stopped seeing friends as much and your romantic relationships never last long. You've sacrificed so much in the name of success, but now you're wondering what was any of it for. There's a constant voice in your head criticizing every choice that got you here. You're wondering if you're destined to feel this way forever.

Black and African American Therapists

As an African American, why might I wish to see a therapist who is African American?

African American clients may seek out African American therapists for several reasons, foremost being a sense of cultural understanding and the possibility of shared experiences. Cultural sensitivity and context on the part of the therapist may make it easier to form a therapeutic alliance and to focus on the work of therapy without the need to explain or educate a therapist on cultural matters. It may also be empowering to work with a therapist who shares one’s racial or ethnic background. It is important to note that a therapist who demonstrates cultural sensitivity can be highly effective even if they do not share a client’s background or race.

Can clients benefit from working with a therapist who shares their race or ethnicity?

Yes, having a therapist who shares a client’s race or ethnicity is often valuable, especially if it fosters a strong therapeutic alliance between the two. While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic effectiveness. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who has an understanding of a client’s background and perhaps also shared life experiences. It should be noted that many clients form a strong bond with their therapist regardless of their race or ethnicity. This is a personal decision, and it depends on the therapist, the client, and the connection between the two.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with African American clients?

Clients can ask therapists directly about their experience working with clients of diverse backgrounds, including with African American individuals. You may wish to inquire whether a therapist has undertaken training in cultural competence broadly, and how specifically they would ensure that their approach is sensitive to the needs of African American clients. Therapy involves honesty and trust, so it’s best for clients to share concerns about their therapist’s cultural competence at the outset. And a good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals based on the concerns you articulate.

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

It’s important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive because everyone comes to therapy with a unique background and set of experiences. Being aware of culture and cultural differences between people is important for understanding clients, as is coming to therapy with an open mind, recognizing that the therapist doesn’t necessarily understand everything and that the client can help guide the way.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Black therapists?

The directory of Black therapists includes therapists who have self-identified their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profile, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. In situations where the number of therapists who have identified as Black is limited, the directory will also show therapists who have undergone specific multicultural training or have extensive experience working with clients from relevant cultural backgrounds.
