I specialize in helping Black and Brown women and femme identifying people and members of the LGBTQ community.
I am passionate about supporting my clients in creating a stronger sense of self. You may find that your choices or behaviors aren't in accordance with your goals and you often feel regret, shame, and worry. Even when you’ve taken the time to sift through societal messages and make decisions based on what feels most authentic, it can still be difficult to stand firm in this while navigating family, relationships, and careers. My work is to validate, affirm, and guide you in gaining deeper understanding of what you value and radiating who you are through action and being.

Our role at SG Wellness is to create a comforting space for Black, Latinx and People of Color to begin exploring patterns and work towards change.
Maybe it's been two months or two years, but it has not been easy. Whether it's your personal life, work life, familial, platonic, or romantic relationships. You may have begun to feel overwhelmed, annoyed, stressed, lonely and even depressed. You compare yourself to others and wonder why your life is not a reflection of the work you've put into it or how you imagined it would be.

As a Black therapist, I view therapy as an integral part of making the world a more just place as you find healthier ways of being in and relating to the world.
Do you often feel like it is you against the world and no one seems to understand who you are? Maybe you even find it hard to understand yourself. Are you grappling with questions about your identity and purpose? Do you feel like an empty shell hopelessly moving through the world? Are you looking for a transformative journey of self-discovery and profound self-understanding in therapy? Together, we will unravel the threads of your self-perceptions, societal pressures, family expectations, and traumas to unearth the essence of your true self.

I am particularly attuned to the difficulties that can accompany one's experience of multiple and intersecting identities including race, culture, religion, gender, sexual preference, class, ability and illness. As a Black & Brown, Puerto Rican therapist it remains essential that I work from an integrative, multi-cultural, and social-justice informed perspective to provide collaborative and creative counseling that accommodates each person’s unique experiences, needs, strengths, and goals. I enjoy facilitating growth and liberation from internalized oppression, internalized capitalism, racial and intergenerational trauma.

Life as a Black girl is nothing short of magical. However, life transitions, societal pressures, and oftentimes, the desire to "have it all together" can throw us off our square. Giving too much of our "magic" or disbursing it in the wrong places can leave us emotionally burnt out and seeking answers externally when the key to change is within. In session, we work to uncover those belief systems and generational traumas that may keep you stuck in a loop. We address patterns of self-sabotage, setting boundaries, and overall coping to strengthen your sense of self and improve your relationships with others.

Philosophy and Practice: I offer short- and long-term psychotherapy. While working collaboratively with clients, we will determine the goals for treatment and the steps towards reaching those goals. Each person has their strengths and weakness and we will work together to access your strengths, while decreasing vulnerabilities to stress. The purpose of psychotherapy is to help people to change in ways that creates a more satisfying life. Past events often get in the way of moving forward and I help clients to let go and find resolution. My focus is on intersectional identity and helping folks of color in particular.

Life can be tough. We all face times when we are overwhelmed by major life changes or decisions, or experience sadness or depression for long periods of time that can make engaging in work and social activities difficult. Past traumas can also affect us in ways we don't expect, requiring a little help to process. My practice uses a strengths based approach to work through challenges together. I believe that we are all the experts of our own experiences, and I use this philosophy to help my clients achieve their goals.

James L. Colter's therapy focuses on the immediate need of the client. He understands that clients need to feel trust and safety before they share some of their most pressing feelings and emotions. His goal is to develop a client-therapist relationship that will provide safety, confidentiality, and support. This allows the client to feel validated and understood as he explores their feelings and emotions. Additionally, he takes special care in personal awareness to provide clients with a safe environment that is free from judgement or bias no matter what cultural or status scenarios present themselves.

Black and African American Therapists

As an African American, why might I wish to see a therapist who is African American?

African American clients may seek out African American therapists for several reasons, foremost being a sense of cultural understanding and the possibility of shared experiences. Cultural sensitivity and context on the part of the therapist may make it easier to form a therapeutic alliance and to focus on the work of therapy without the need to explain or educate a therapist on cultural matters. It may also be empowering to work with a therapist who shares one’s racial or ethnic background. It is important to note that a therapist who demonstrates cultural sensitivity can be highly effective even if they do not share a client’s background or race.

Can clients benefit from working with a therapist who shares their race or ethnicity?

Yes, having a therapist who shares a client’s race or ethnicity is often valuable, especially if it fosters a strong therapeutic alliance between the two. While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic effectiveness. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who has an understanding of a client’s background and perhaps also shared life experiences. It should be noted that many clients form a strong bond with their therapist regardless of their race or ethnicity. This is a personal decision, and it depends on the therapist, the client, and the connection between the two.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with African American clients?

Clients can ask therapists directly about their experience working with clients of diverse backgrounds, including with African American individuals. You may wish to inquire whether a therapist has undertaken training in cultural competence broadly, and how specifically they would ensure that their approach is sensitive to the needs of African American clients. Therapy involves honesty and trust, so it’s best for clients to share concerns about their therapist’s cultural competence at the outset. And a good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals based on the concerns you articulate.

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

It’s important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive because everyone comes to therapy with a unique background and set of experiences. Being aware of culture and cultural differences between people is important for understanding clients, as is coming to therapy with an open mind, recognizing that the therapist doesn’t necessarily understand everything and that the client can help guide the way.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Black therapists?

The directory of Black therapists includes therapists who have self-identified their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profile, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. In situations where the number of therapists who have identified as Black is limited, the directory will also show therapists who have undergone specific multicultural training or have extensive experience working with clients from relevant cultural backgrounds.
