Problems and stress happen to all of us but stick to every person a little differently depending on our biology and life experiences. The symptoms that result from a high degree of stress, like anxiety and depression, require interventions like any other medical issue, or they will worsen, creating more health problems. Healing and change require a lot of compassion and a partnership of constructive problem solving. Therapy helps us do 2 important things: 1) Better manage disruptive symptoms and stressors. 2) Recover and discover meaning and success in life.
We all have developed coping skills for managing life's problems as an effort to manage stress the best way we know how - unfortunately, often in unproductive ways. Therapy aims to create a safe and supportive environment, then gives us coping skills to decrease painful emotions and avoid harmful behaviors.
We can start to recover goals and identify what our own meaning of happiness and success is. I have 25 years of experience in community mental health that includes therapy practice, disability and recovery supports, and general social work.
