I believe in your creative potential. By creative, I mean the ability to imagine the life you want and work towards achieving it. This may mean changing old patterns of anxiety, depression, inhibition or impulsivity that are no longer working. To help you do this, I establish a relaxing atmosphere where you are encouraged to reflect but not judge and to welcome the unexpected. I also work with dreams to reach unconscious aspects of problems and find solutions. I want to understand you as deeply as possible as we work on your issues of concern.

You've been thinking about finding a therapist for a while but you're just so f#%&ing busy! How will you possibly find the time? And that very busyness is maybe even what has taken a toll on your current personal state of affairs. You've focused so much on career (and successfully so) that some of the other major pieces of life that you just assumed would fall into place have...well...they just HAVEN'T. Perhaps that's finding a great romantic partner, or building a network of friends, or addressing the chronic, high-functioning anxiety that keeps you up night after night.

"Adulting" can be an emotional rollercoaster – a time filled with career and academic highs, depressing lows, and outstretched uncertainty. The young clients I work with seek therapy for all the emotional turmoil life throws at you: pressures to succeed, anxiety, trouble sleeping, perfectionism, and rocky relationships. Others I see come to therapy with a broader wish to understand their own nature, to see themselves and timeworn habits more clearly. In each case, my goal is not to simply fix problems in your life, but rather to help you gain control when it seems like the world around you is spinning.

I provide an opportunity for people to freely express their feelings and thoughts to achieve the changes they desire. I work interactively with clients so they may develop their strengths and achieve their goals. Assisting individuals in becoming at ease with their feelings, however difficult they may be, is an important aspect of the work I do. Feelings can become useful tools for living rather than disturbing impediments. The ubiquitous problems of uncomfortable feelings, harmful behaviors, and the challenges of relationships, careers and parenting are common areas of focus.

Beginning psychotherapy can be a very hopeful but intimidating experience. You may be wondering: What will a therapist make of my story? How is therapy going to really help me feel better? or resolve my problems? My goal is to help you understand what your emotions really are and how they affect your mind, brain and body. We tend to over-focus on our thoughts and tune out emotional experience. What is really healing is to have awareness of both and understand how thoughts and emotions work together to help you feel better or worse depending how you handle them.

We create personal narratives to make sense of our subjective experience of life. Embedded in our narrative, are the internalized images of ourselves that we draw on to explain our lives (e.g. unworthy, undesirable, shameful, superior, unappreciated etc.). In therapy we examine the images that so often lead us to make the unconscious choices that return us to the painfully familiar circumstances that have come to define our life. As we become aware of the ways in which our images have unwittingly influenced our choices, we will have the opportunity to make new choices that may better support living the life to which we aspire.

Seeking help can be a very overwhelming and humbling experience. But it is also a step toward the dignity and self-respect that come from facing, head on, your pain and suffering. Therapy is a lot like learning to hold your hand over a hot flame. Left to our own devices, we wince and turn away. This is why finding a good match, someone you can trust, is essential. And this is why I consider it a privilege to do this work.

I work with adults and adolescents living with chronic illness, adjusting to new diagnoses, and coping with difficult losses. These experiences often lead to feelings of hopelessness, isolation, depression, and anxiety. I work collaboratively with my clients to get a holistic understanding of the demands put upon them by their experience with chronic illness. Together we will explore how past and current life experiences contribute to the problems you are experiencing today. I began acting professionally as a teenager, performed and recorded as singer and multi-instrumentalist, studied jazz improvisation and began teaching.
