I enjoy working with clients who are experiencing difficult life transitions, adoption, sexual trauma, mood and anxiety disorders, and those who aren't quite sure what category they would fall into. Once you walk into the room it is up to the therapist & the client to figure out how the therapist can facilitate personal life growth. In session we will learn to Express ourselves through art, nature, our bodies and minds. We may take a walk, create something abstract or sit and talk; the therapy adventure is yours and I am simply a therapist to guide you towards stability, growth and your highest potential.

I have certification in the ARC (Attachment, Regulation, Competency) framework and have completed certification in adoption competent therapy.
As a therapist, my goal is to walk alongside clients as we explore their unique experiences and struggles. I believe that people have innate creative abilities when it comes to healing and self-understanding. Sometimes stress and trauma can block or limit our ability to connect to that innate skill. I utilize relational and strengths-based approaches and support people’s understanding of their own self and path. My therapy background revolves around trauma, attachment, and growth in parenting/caregiving. I enjoy working with parents/caregivers of children with complex social, behavioral, relational, and developmental needs.

I enjoy working with adults and emerging adults on discovering and developing their individual identity. Often when we become ourselves, underlying traumas and other mental health issues are brought to light, so it is important to me to ensure that those issues are handled with care and compassion. Those that I work with strive to understand who they are in spite of the things that have happened to them so that they may live a truly happy life exactly as they were meant to, they just need a little assistance developing the skills to overcome current and future obstacles. Tharseo Counseling Services was founded around one idea: hope through a relationship with Jesus Christ. With hope comes the possibility of change, growth, and purpose. Without it, we can feel isolated, burdensome, and despairing. Tharseo exists for two reasons: First, to help the hopeless find their source of hope in Christ, which allows them to walk securely through life with conviction and purpose. Secondly, Tharseo assists those already with that hope to navigate obstacles that threaten to misalign them from their known purpose. We do this by integrating biblical principles with practical application.

I am a licensed mental health counselor, and have enjoyed doing this work for 21 years. I am extensively trained in object relations, attachment, Circle of Security, and EMDR. I value each person I see as an individual with unique history, needs, and approach to life. I don't feel that it is ever my job to tell you what to do in your life. It is my job to help you discover what is blocking you from living life the way you want to live it, and then help you to clear those blocks out of the way.

You deserve time to focus on and explore your needs, to explore your full self, to process challenges that you've experienced, and to be heard and acknowledged for what you've seen in this life. I enjoy working on topics such as life balance, self care, relationships, boundaries, vicarious trauma, and foster/adoptive parenting. There is intrinsic healing when we enter into relationship, and that's what counseling is all about. Counseling is an opportunity to have someone by your side as you navigate the current season of your life. It's about helping you unlock more of the potential that's already inside.

Hello, my name is Benjamin Menard. I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker beginning my private practice in Spokane. My specialty is non-directive play therapy for children ages 4 – 12. I use this client-centered approach with the theory that children use their play to communicate more effectively than language and typical talk therapy. I see play therapy as a way to meet children where they are and learn from them about their world.

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
