I approach counseling with the understanding that all individuals have a unique story that is deserving of a safe space to process and heal. I believe that the counseling room can be a place that encourages hope and helps individuals enter into a healthier, deeper, and richer understanding of both themselves and others. Although I have a degree in Christian counseling, my practice welcomes individuals of all worldviews to engage with their stories in a way that invites restoration and healing. In addition to my time at Gordon-Conwell, I have been trained in EMDR, DBT Skills Training, and am a Certified First Responder Associate.

I work with children, adolescents, and adults. It is my goal to help these individuals work through struggles with attachment/relationships, anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma and more at their own pace. As a neurodivergent, I am passionate about helping others learn how to function with and to love their own neurodivergence. I also enjoy working with parents (biological, foster, adoptive) who want to better their relationship, communication, understanding, and/or attachment with their children. I work diligently to maintain a safe and affirming space for members of the LGBTQIA+ community and their families.

It takes such courage to open ourselves to the possibility of healing when we have been hurt. But the fullness of life that grows out of engaging in the healing process is something I continue to experience personally in my own life and professionally with my clients. While we receive our deepest wounds in relationships, it is in relationships that we can also experience the deepest healing. Some of the bravest people I have ever met are the individuals I sit with in the counseling office, and I commend you for starting the process by looking for a counselor.

In a world that continues to turn with or without us, we often wonder where we can get off in order to regroup. When we are expected to fulfill all of the everyday roles that we have taken on, we tend to lose touch with ourselves. My purpose is to provide an open, restorative and non-judgmental healing space for you. I am pleased to work with individuals who want help with anxiety, depression, trauma and grief. As well as providing support during life transitions, unexpected changes and personal growth.

I believe that people change through having new experiences. Whether it’s simply having a confidential space to share, feeling understood in a new way, becoming mindful of emotions and thought patterns, or taking the risk of vulnerability, change happens when we step out of the familiar. Sometimes we get to choose this, and other times it’s forced upon us by events beyond our control. Informed by my own experiences of pain and healing, I seek to come alongside my clients in the process of change, as well as in the process of acceptance, recognizing that both are often needed as we move through life.

Our mission is to increase accessibility to quality mental health and wellness services to the LGBTQ+ population. Maybe you just realized that you are gay or trans and you don’t know what to do next. Maybe you’re one of the many LGBTQ+ persons who have faced abuse, depression, anxiety, or other mental health struggles and are simply trying to exist. Maybe you're in a polyamorous/ENM relationship struggling with communication hangups, parenting, mismatched sexual desire or infidelity. Or maybe you spent your whole life shaming yourself for being "lazy," or "irresponsible," but you just can't seem to make your brain work with you.

Are you seeking inner peace? Desperate for relief from the troubles surrounding you? Anxious, scared, lonely, sad or confused? It can be hard raising children. Typically after giving birth many moms find themselves in a sea of emotions. In this stage of life that can be labeled “blissful,” it may actually feel overwhelming. Your idea of being a perfect parent is shattered on the floor, along with the heaps of laundry and scattered toys. Your childhood trauma may be getting triggered and it can feel exhausting. You want to be fully present for your family and more importantly yourself. This is the time to reach out and get help.

Over the past 28 years, I have enjoyed working with individuals, couples and families from a relational perspective. I particularly enjoy working with men who struggle with issues of communication and intimacy. My counseling takes a dynamic, interpersonal approach to seeking healing, because I believe that we grow in the context of intentional community with one another. While I am a Christian, I welcome those into my office from all world views and perspectives.

Have you tried talk therapy but still feel stuck? I am an artist and art therapist with over 35 years of personal recovery. My background is in 12 Step models, Jungian psychology, family systems and lots of art making experience. YOU DO NOT NEED ART TRAINING OR TALENT TO BENEFIT FROM ART THERAPY. Because art is a right-brained function, art therapy can be especially useful to people who are "too smart" for talk therapy. I have also begun using art to process trauma as well. Interested? Schedule an assessment!

Embracing life's uncertainties, transitions, & unmet expectations can be challenging, but we are able to move forward with meaning & purpose. Sometimes building a level of resilience & mental fortitude is required for us to progress. By using an underlying attachment-based approach, I’m able to provide therapeutic services that are safe, authentic, & non-judgemental to allow for healing & growth. I have found that tailoring the modalities used to each client provides positive outcomes in various situations. EMDR, exposure & response prevention (ERP), experiential activities, & play therapy are among those that I am trained in.

I have always wanted to support others in meeting their full potential. To me this means supporting others in seeing themselves as whole and beautifully flawed. When we can acknowledge and love all parts of ourselves we are so much closer to that potential. I often hear from clients that they know what they should do to heal, but find themselves stuck in old patterns. With my training in whole body healing such as EMDR and Brainspotting, we can learn new ways of being. I also provide animal assisted therapy with my co- therapist Koda Bear.

There are several things in my life which drive me to be a counselor. My own past with it struggles, acceptances, failures, and successes drive me to do what I do. I am able to sit in dark places, empathize with struggle and loneliness, and challenge ways of thinking and behaving from a non-judgmental place. I love the unique position a counselor has to problem solve through the failures, walk the uphill road to recovery, and celebrate the success and growth that comes out of the journey.

How can I find a therapist in Chattanooga?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
