I work with adults of any age, gender, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Together we address a range of issues including depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, work and career challenges, and self-image and self-worth. Often there are deeper and more long-standing issues stemming from early life experiences. I specialize in helping people to connect with the unconscious script they are enacting, which is often in contradiction to their stated desires for their lives. Whether you are looking for counseling for your child, yourself or your family, I would enjoy walking with you through your current need to the place of healing and success in life that you would like to reach. For 30+ years I have worked closely with children and their families who have experienced traumatic life events, including domestic violence, sexual assault and violent loss. There is hope for you to move from being a victim to being a survivor; or from being a harassed parent to one who experiences peace with their child.

One of my strengths is that I know how hard it can be to get started in therapy, so I always try to be sensitive and reassuring to my clients as we get to know each other. I am capable of reaching many different types of clients, but I most enjoy helping people who have been struggling for a long time and who cannot see a way out of their situation.

"We hurt because of relationships; therefore, we heal through relationships" is one of the countless beliefs that guide my practice. Through a person-centered, deeply trauma informed approach, I welcome you or your child into the therapy room where a safe space is held to feel and explore hurtful or traumatic experiences from your life. Everyone deserves to live a life that is not dictated or controlled by their past. I recognize that in order for this or occur, people need to be seen and heard and their experiences validated. This includes children, adolescents, their parents, and adults.

I also combine my own life experiences with my professional training, working with families who have been impacted by adoption or childhood adversity.
We are not meant to do life alone. I am willing to be a safe, respectful, and collaborative guide for you or your relationship, make sense of your struggles and find your way toward your longings. If you are done relying on attempts at self-improvement, let’s work together to restore personal, emotional, and relational well-being. A specific problem or crisis may have driven you to seek therapy but you may find that “symptom reduction” is only part of the journey we will take toward wholeness.

Does this describe you? You're a people pleaser, wanting to make everyone happy but yourself. You feel the pain of break-ups and grief very intensely. You are fiercely independent and hate taking help from others. Being placed for adoption can reverberate through all aspects of your life. I help clients grieving the losses associated with adoption; transracial adoptees dealing with identity issues; and adoptees working through all of the complex emotions related to search and reunion. As an adoptee myself, I "get it". I also work with the other sides of the adoption triad: birthparents and adoptive parents.

Let's explore ways we can get you back on the road to your success. Life gives us ups & downs & bumps along the way. How you choose to react may determine your future. These are opportunities to learn about ourselves & grow from these experiences. We may need help clarifying & identifying what the lesson might be. My approach is to help you learn how to cope & adjust to them in a supportive space. Our time together may involve a variety of approaches, depending on your needs & preferences. Humanistic/Client-Centered, Cognitive-Behavioral, Mindfulness-based, & Reality Therapy, would be the approaches I'm likely to explore with you.

Focus is on grief and loss, relationship patterns, self-worth, and adoption.
WELCOME TO LIVING A LIFE OF BALANCE All of us face struggles in our lives. We experience problems and difficulties sometimes on a daily basis and other times only occasionally. When we feel stuck we have a tendency to repeat negative or self-defeating patterns/behaviors. This repetition often causes us to become overly critical of ourselves. Our work together is designed to help you to understand the why and how so that you can make the changes you want in your life. Change is never easy; however it is so worth it!! You will be pleasantly surprised by how happy you will become.

Adoption Therapists

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
