I am a licensed clinical psychologist with a special clinical concentration in relationships, couples and adoption.
Anais Nin said, "There comes a time when the risk to remain tight in the bud is more painful than the risk it takes to blossom. " Psychotherapy is sometimes the most effective way to begin to blossom. The slow and comfortable establishment of mutual trust will come first as we work to fully understand your unique personality and situation. Together we will explore the the source(s) of pain or struggle in your life & identify practical, workable solutions. You & I will work as a team to ensure you have the support you need as you begin to feel better about yourself and your life.

I am an outpatient therapist in Charlotte, NC specializing in adoption and the treatment of developmental trauma. I am keenly versed in the psychological issues and unique social/emotional challenges these children present. Adoptive families are often frustrated and sometimes frightened by their children's behaviors. Most of the children I treat spent time in an orphanage or in the foster care system. A few were adopted at birth. They learned early in life not to rely on adults as a result of early deprivation. Parenting is a challenge! Psychoeducation and support are the essential tools to create healthy families.

Children, adolescents, and families are the focus of my practice. Developing and strengthening the parent-child relationship is especially important with young children. Helping children learn to feel more capable and independent is important for school age children. Developing autonomy and learning to make good choices is critical for adolescents. By creating achievable goals together and working in a safe and supportive environment, we are able to create positive experiences for both children and parents.

A candidate at the Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas in Chapel Hill, Dr. Boyce has a deep appreciation of the complexities of the mind as well as the impact of early experiences and relationships. Psychodynamic and psychoanalytic theories offer a comprehensive understanding of human nature. As opposed to other models that aim to solve a particular problem or target symptoms, psychoanalysis gets to the heart of the matter. Dr. Boyce provides therapy that addresses the whole person, helping the individual to develop inner capacities that can improve relationships as well as foster a richer, more meaningful life.

I have had the privilege and experience of working with individuals, couples, families, Service Members, the LGBTQ+ community, battered mothers, and those affiliated with the adoption and foster community ranging from foster and adopted parents and children as well as birth parents.
Counseling should be a safe and judgment-free place for individuals to voice their concerns. In a world where we are constantly judged, I feel that counseling provides a unique place to allow for personal understanding and growth while reflecting on what drives our concerns, emotions, and behaviors. The counseling journey should be a joint partnership to help the client realize their own potential for growth. I use a variety of therapeutic interventions that are centered around each individual.

My journey in the profession began 20 years ago as a Psychology major working in campus ministry, followed by employment in community mental health and adoption agencies.
I aim to create a safe and supportive therapeutic relationship while my clients work toward wholeness where they feel wounded. Symptoms of anxiety or depression often usher us into difficult life change that can eventually lead toward improved emotional health. I work from an eclectic theoretical orientation using attachment theory, Internal Family Systems, Narrative-Focused Trauma Care, and faith if clients desire. I utilize Strengths-Based theory with teens, which is an evidence-based approach to suicide prevention. I specialize in teens and work well with high-performing women who struggle with anxiety.

Family can be a source of joy and strength but can also be chaotic and overwhelming at times. I know that life transitions and big events can be challenging for individuals and that sometimes having an outside resource to talk to can be helpful. If you are struggling to start a family, dealing with pregnancy/postpartum related mental health concerns, pursuing kinship care/foster care/adoption, or working to overcome a traumatic experience, I would love to connect and see if I can assist you in reaching your goals.

Adoption Therapists

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
