As an adopted person, I am passionate about working with individuals impacted by adoption/attachment issues to improve relationships and better know themselves.
Choosing a therapist is sometimes the most overwhelming part of getting help! Relationship is very important to the process, and I am happy to schedule a free phone consultation to discuss your goals for therapy and find out if we are a good match. I believe in an individualized approach that will help you get out of therapy what YOU want to achieve.

I also specialize in areas related to adoption as an adoption counselor, consultant, search specialist, or mediator.
When I first walked into a therapist's office as a client, I was a ball of knotted yarn, twisted with emotion, anxiety, and confusion. I needed something...relief; to make sense of things once again; to understand myself; to identify and solve a problem. I needed someone to help me sort it out. I want to help you unknot that ball of yarn. I want my clients to feel accepted and understood, recognizing their inherent value and strength, through our interactions and exploration of themselves. You are the expert on you. I am the witness, reflection, and guide. I would be honored to help you work through whatever it is you need.

Some of the main issues that I have helped with are: sense of self, anxiety, depression, adoption, relationships, parent-child relationships, marriage, life transitions, etc.
Since 2012 I have been working with adolescents and young adults navigating various different struggles of their life. Together, with their families (when appropriate) we work to develop a plan and a path towards health and healing. It isn't always easy, in fact it’s often counterintuitive and confusing. Healing isn't linear, but what I can offer is a chance to communicate better, connect, and return your home to a peaceful place. Whether you are struggling with relationships, yourself, school or work, I am ready to help you navigate whatever it is that is going on in your mind, and move you towards a more meaningful life.

In my practice I work with families and children who have experienced trauma and are having attachment difficulties. Many children I see have pre-verbal trauma from parental stress during pregnancy, adoption, neglect, or abuse. Some of the children I see are experiencing traumatic stress due to gender fluidity or gender dysphoria. Because trauma is the result of feeling helpless in a situation, many of the families I see have never thought of their child's behavior as a symptom of a life trauma. This shift in perspective is often the beginning of the healing process.

My family is multiracial, formed partially through adoption.
Life can be full of joy but can also be lonely and deeply painful. Your personal life may feel unbalanced or your relationships seem stuck. I think it is very courageous to seek health and healing from hurt, internal strife or relational trauma. Relationships cause tremendous pain but can also be the source of magnificent healing. Oftentimes a comfortable, inviting space where you can safely explore who you are at your core is just what you need to begin flourishing and thriving. That same space can be precisely the respite your relationships need.

I've worked extensively with adolescents in foster care and adoption.
Hi, my name is Perry, and my approach to therapy involves helping clients to: gain new perspectives, relate differently to their identified problems, and discover more in their stories. I encourage my clients to challenge, explore and reimagine the narratives that they have formed or were formed about themselves. I apply several counseling techniques to therapy like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and more. Ultimately, I aim to provide support and practical feedback to my clients as they embark on the path towards self-love, gratitude, belonging, and healing.

As a counselor for individuals, I bring personal experience in education, foster care, and adoption.
This is not how I wanted things to be! I wish things were different! Thoughts like this run through your mind, and you are unsure what to do next. You have dreams and plans, things are not turning out, or you keep getting in your way. Do you feel like there are answers out there, and you have been unable to access them? Do you sometimes wish you could talk to someone who can give you an outside perspective?

People seek therapy for variety of reasons, ranging from difficulties with a specific life event or a general pursuit for greater purpose and connectedness. Psychotherapy offers an arena for self exploration unlike any other and can prove to be a profoundly moving experience. I work with individuals affected by trauma, difficulties in relationships, depression/post-partum depression, infertility, adoption, parenting, struggles in cultural adaptation and immigration, identity, self-esteem, sexuality, etc. Often I find that the most meaningful change comes from those who are open and willing to engage in the journey. The change you seek comes from you and will be our guiding force.

Play is the place where children’s minds, hearts, and souls meet. Through Play Therapy, children are able to heal from distressing events such as, but not limited to, trauma, grief and loss, divorce, depression, adoption, foster care and attachment issues; and to improve in myriad areas such as impulse control, emotional regulation, ADHD, OCD, and ODD. As your child’s therapist, my goal is to enable children to heal, so that they are empowered to “rise and shine” to their highest potential.

I am an adoption competent clinician, familiar with common issues present for all parties involved, including grief and loss, parenting challenges, and the search and reunion process.
Hi, my name is Claycie and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I'm glad you are here! I believe therapy should be a truly collaborative experience as we work together on approaches that may work best for you. I value feedback and open communication about what would be most helpful as you begin the healing process. I work with adults dealing with adoption issues, trauma, grief and loss, and religious trauma, utilizing elements of CBT, ACT, EMDR, IFS, and mindfulness. Difficult life experiences can disconnect us from ourselves, and I aim to help clients start trusting that they are fully capable of healing.

Some typical focus areas are anxiety, depression, stress, grief, anger, relationship issues, ruptured attachment, adoption and adjustment, developmental and adult trauma, and substance abuse.
Shannon became a therapist to help people navigate their complex world, improve their mental health, and experience joy-filled lives. She utilizes clinically tested and evidence-based interventions and believes in a holistic approach to mental health and that all areas of one’s life are interconnected. Research shows that unhealthy relationships and traumatic events can cause emotional, relational, and physical stress. In contrast, healthy relationships, boundaries, and emotional healing in therapy can improve your overall well-being and life satisfaction.

My history of experience includes adoption, foster care, attachment, abuse, neglect, and maladaptive behaviors.
I know what it's like to feel broken, hopeless, and alone. I also know how it feels to come out of a season like that. One of my greatest passions is to walk alongside others facing challenges that they feel unequipped to handle. It takes courage to ask for help, especially with the negative stigma attached to therapy. I offer a safe and non-judgmental space to help adults and children find the strength to move forward. Wherever it is that you find yourself, know that you are not meant to go through it alone.

Adoption Therapists

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
