Road blocks can sometimes be a normal part of life allowing us to learn and grow; however, sometimes these road blocks can become so overwhelming and powerful we are left feeling hopeless. It is a primary goal of mine to help individuals and/or families reclaim their lives by restoring their sense of hope through counseling. I have experience working with children, adolescents, and adults in both individual and family therapy.

Parenting a child from a hard place can be lonely and isolating. When I adopted my own children, I just wanted to be a mom. I thought that love was enough. The reality is, these children have suffered enormous loss and trauma and often display challenging behaviors. I am blessed that I am able to walk alongside families on their path to healing and share what I have learned. I have been a pediatric critical care nurse for 19 years. I have spent my career helping children and their families during what was most likely one of the most challenging and stressful times in their lives.

Exploring the unknown? I work with clients who find themselves entering into a new life phase. Recently divorced? Discovered a partner's infidelity? Trying to conceive? Experiencing anxiety after a baby? Exploring who you are as an adult adoptee? These phases may have been forced upon you, or maybe they were made by choice. Each one can be difficult due to the particular and unique shame and/or societal beliefs about them. I work with clients to set boundaries, identify their values, re-write their narratives, while implementing healthy lifestyle changes.

I am a home based therapist. I believe all children deserve a loving family that knows how to best parent them. While I do not have an "ideal client" per se, I do believe no child should be taken off alone to develop an attachment to me, the therapist. Children should attach and bond to their parents so therapy with foster and adopted children is most effective within the family. When working with older youth in foster care, individual therapy may be warranted, but I would prefer to work with the family whenever that is a viable option.

As a Registered Play Therapist, I work with children 1 year and older with a variety of presenting concerns: anxiety, ADHD, social difficulties, academic struggles, behavioral concerns, divorce, life transitions, self-esteem, anger, and grief. My passion lies with children and their families who have experienced trauma, abuse or attachment difficulties. Recent brain research has proven that the absence of a secure attachment with a primary caregiver negatively impacts the child's normal developmental process. In order to ensure inner change, my play therapy work often initially focuses on developing a positive, consistent, and nurturing relationship with an attachment figure.

Drawing on my previous experience as a youth pastor, I enjoy working with children, teenagers, and young adults. As a play therapist, I have worked extensively with children who are struggling with ADHD and trauma. I also enjoy working with couples and families, and individuals who struggle with addiction, anxiety, trauma, relationship issues and PTSD. The challenge of parenting sparks my interest and I enjoy using humor, emotion coaching, and intergenerational systemic family theories to illuminate and strengthen the resources that parents already have to offer. I believe that solutions can be found by viewing obstacles as opportunities for repair.

I believe in trying differently, rather than harder. Different approaches and thinking out of the box can create change in even the most difficult situations. Evidence based practices are individualized to the person, family and situation. Parenting children with trauma (neglect, physical, emotional and sexual abuse) and prenatal alcohol exposure (OR BOTH) can be extremely difficult. It is often overwhelming and frustrating. Parenting these children requires different approaches than parenting "neurotypical" kiddos. They struggle with healthy attachment, viewing every person and situation through a "survival' lens of distrust.
