Clients come to me and receive compassionate care without negative judgment as a means to make meaning of the events of their lives. That new understanding, gained in a supportive coaching relationship with the therapist, becomes the foundation for positive change. Open and self-aware clients tend to want validation of their thoughts and challenges to what hasn't worked. Skeptical clients tend to desire safety and assurance that someone is on their side. Regardless of the category, clients tend to get what they need from one session to the next.

Extensive research shows the client-therapist relationship is the most essential part of therapy. I encourage you to find the right fit. Topics I have helped clients successfully work through: complex trauma, helping change attachment styles, boundary identification & implementation, infidelity, dysfunctional communication, repetitive arguments on the same topic, kinks or differences in sexual interests (ex. BDSM, non-monogamy, cuckolding, etc.), and severe anxiety/depression. I enjoy helping individuals & couples find new ways of relating in order to embrace the complexity of love in their relationships.

I’m Bori, a therapist and a trauma-specialist. Let me first say this: thank you very much for being who you are. I do appreciate that you are prioritizing yourself in this healing journey. I appreciate that you have made this audacious, brave decision to seek counseling. No matter where you are or which season you are in, your story matters. Your struggle matters. Your being matters. Your inner child matters.

What would it feel like to give yourself the space to sit and explore emotions, memories, and thoughts instead of avoiding or changing them? It is okay if your answer is “scary” or “gross”. While acknowledging that I cannot determine whether a space is safe or not, I strive to offer a space of non-judgement, validation, compassion and growth where you can get to know yourself more, build insight and acknowledgement of your strengths, and talk about whatever you need to for an hour.

Do you live in your head where you rethink all that you do? Is it hard to sleep at night due to life's stressors? Are you seeking direction and purpose in your life? Wearing a mask to exist through life can be draining and hard to maintain. On the other hand, developing the courage to share your true feelings authentically and inner emotions can be liberating. Therapy is where you can create positive habits and rituals to help manage stressors, heal trauma, and live a healthy life. Living with intentionality takes strength, awareness, and daily practice.

My professional background was built on working with teenagers and young adults. In today's world, people migrate more than ever before and settle down later in life than previous generations have done. These new trends have forced us to redefine how we relate to one another and also to increase the number of social connections. Whether we are discussing anxiety, depression, procrastination, indecision, relationships, or existential dilemmas; I truly commit to helping people navigate through these complexities of modern-day life. It is honoring to be a part of their journey, and, in that, I feel blessed.

Hello there! I would love to hear from you about what's going on, and I think I can help. I am a licensed clinical professional counselor specializing in child, adolescent, adult, family, and couples psychotherapy. I provide treatment for psychological and emotional issues using an integrative Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) approach combined with a psychodynamic perspective. During crisis, it is important for my clients to have the skills to gracefully endure their suffering (the DBT component)--all the while keeping in mind the harder to see big picture where deeper issues occur at an unconscious level (the psychodynamic component).

You deserve to be happy. If you are like most of my clients, you may have experienced some painful event in the past that keeps you stuck. Others seek help with anxiety and depression that is blocking them from living the joyful life they aspire to. Many of my clients say past traumas prevent them from having the type of deep fulfilling relationships they are worthy of. These clients often describe therapy with me as being relaxed and friendly - like talking with a confidant - achieving gains through our sessions that they have not obtained previously.

Starting your therapy journey can be anxiety provoking and intimidating. I commend you for taking this important step to show up for yourself. I believe that presenting symptoms are adaptive and protective forms of coping that you have learned over time. We are influenced and impacted by the many contexts in which we live, whether that be familial systems or systems of oppression. Uncovering root causes to symptoms and gently diving deeper into self awareness and understanding of your past and present experiences will be the cornerstone of our time together.

I believe my role as a therapist is to help you hold and find meaning in your pain, and delight with you in what is playful and pleasureful in your life. My approach is warm, direct, and collaborative. I am interested in creating a genuine, transparent and accountable relationship with you. My hope is that within our relationship we can identify and interrupt harmful patterns that may emerge in your relationships and reinforce patterns that bring you joy and connection. Therapy is inherently political, and I aim to engage with my clients in ways that are liberatory, anti-racist and affirming of their intersecting identities.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Chicago?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
