Often, despite knowing what they "should" or "could" do to achieve personal growth, people feel stuck in similar patterns. Others feel lost or that they don't feel content. So many of life's challenges evoke painful feelings, including sadness, fear, anxiety, frustration, loneliness, and isolation. I see therapy as a space where I can help my patients understand those feelings and how they relate to their personal, familial and cultural narratives. With that in hand, patients gain freedom and confidence in how they choose to navigate the world.

From the outside you seem to have it all together. Inside you feel down, trapped, lost, and lonely despite not being alone. You're frustrated with life but don't know what to do about it. After achieving some life goals you're stuck wondering: now what? Maybe you successfully made it through school and into your early career, but it's not what you were hoping for. Maybe you're torn between wanting a relationship and wanting to remain fiercely independent, or you want a partner but the idea of dating is nerve-racking. Perhaps you're in a relationship but you still feel lonely. Something's missing, but you're not sure what.

Do you feel that you are stuck and time is passing you by? Do you get caught up in ruminating loops of worry? Find yourself overwhelmed or despairingly lonely? Stuck in the same dynamics with other people? Do you find that you continually distract and insulate yourself from your feelings? Perhaps you have trouble tolerating the unknown to such a degree that you find it hard to feel fully alive. I work with people with anxiety, depression, complicated grief, C-PTSD, symptoms of dysregulation, and problems at work, in relationships, or with family. I'll help you learn to regulate your emotions while we work to shift what is going on.

Do you sometimes wish life could be easier? At some point in life we may feel overwhelmed by work pressure, family conflicts, relationships, financial difficulties, or any other modern life challenges. Even without a serious trigger we can sometimes feel simply exhausted. We obsessively think about the same topic, and we have difficulties falling or staying asleep. After a while we start to feel incompetent, ashamed, doubting ourselves, and totally unmotivated.

Feeling disconnected from your empowerment, you often recognize the good in others but struggle to see yourself in the same positive light. Battling self-criticism, anxiety, and worst-case scenarios is keeping you awake at night and stubborn inner obstacles are hindering your needs and desires. Yearning to overcome unhelpful thought patterns and habits, you feel defeated by overwhelming emotions and alone in your experience. You long to establish nourishing practices and incorporate balance into your life, but a living with purpose feels like a faraway dream, and you feel stuck in a spiral of disappointment.

I specialize in working with people who are experiencing life transitions, such as starting or ending a relationship, marriage, divorce, parenting, school or career, loss of a loved one, aging, and existential anxiety. Transitions can be stressful because it means you need to make changes in how you are living your life. I work with people who are at a crossroads of important decisions or who are having difficulties navigating and adjusting to a change in life circumstances. Going in a direction you have not gone before can bring up feelings of fear, doubt, and uncertainty.

As a psychotherapist I work to create a warm, safe environment where deep personal issues can be explored. I believe that we are shaped by our relationships and life experiences, and life in New York is notoriously fast-paced, hectic, and, yes, sometimes frightening, The constant changes we face such as career change, job loss, relationship loss, an empty nest, can create anxiety and even depression. I would like to bring my life experience and training to help you work through any or all of your major life issues to enable you to improve your life and coping skills.

Sometimes self-care consists of a night out in the city, a spa day, or binge watching your favorite tv show on the couch all day. Other times, self-care requires us to delve deep. You may need to incorporate mindfulness into your busy day or learn relaxation skills to help you cope with stress. You may need to give yourself grace and improve your relationship with self or build interpersonal relationship skills as you seek more social interactions post Covid19. You may be having difficulties adjusting to a life transition or understanding a diagnosis. If any of these resonate with you, I am the therapist for you.

Life as a Black girl is nothing short of magical. However, life transitions, societal pressures, and oftentimes, the desire to "have it all together" can throw us off our square. Giving too much of our "magic" or disbursing it in the wrong places can leave us emotionally burnt out and seeking answers externally when the key to change is within. In session, we work to uncover those belief systems and generational traumas that may keep you stuck in a loop. We address patterns of self-sabotage, setting boundaries, and overall coping to strengthen your sense of self and improve your relationships with others.

No matter who you are, where you are, or what stage you’re in, life can be so challenging. You don’t have to go through it alone. My aim as a therapist is to work together with you to create a validating and nonjudgmental space where you can process any emotions, feelings, fantasies, or the daily happenings of your life. I know self-exploration can feel overwhelming and scary, especially when discussing it out loud to someone else. I believe that the most impactful therapeutic relationships involve client self-determination and agency, where we collaborate as a team ensure you feel comfortable and safe every step of the way.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in New York?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
