Warm wishes and kudos to you for reaching out in this time of such uncertainty. I know all too well how uncertainty in the future and loss of control can contribute to anxiety and feelings of defeat. I have over 10-yrs of experience supporting individuals and couples in the midst of crisis and loss of control. While each circumstance is unique and will vary, please be assured that you are not, and do not have to navigate this alone. Whether it’s loss of purpose, lack of direction or feeling an overall loss of control, I will partner with you to identify your goals and reach fulfillment while gaining a sense of relief along the way.

Beginning therapy can feel difficult or come with a lot of unknown. That's why it is an honor for me to work with my clients and foster a space that is non-judgmental, warm, safe, and collaborative. I work with individuals who may want to explore topics like anxiety, emerging adulthood, experiencing life transitions, women's issues, those transitioning to a life with Type I diabetes, identify development, relationship (familial, friendship, romantic etc.) challenges and more.

I help women and men who are hurting, angry, and struggling to find their way through life's challenges, to create real and lasting change. Maybe you find it difficult to reach out for help or feel you should be able to manage your own problems, but I know it can be frustrating and demoralizing when real change remains elusive. I will work with you to more fully understand the roots of the issues at hand and collaboratively find resolution and greater freedom.

Sometimes our life experiences can leave us feeling stuck, confused, and unable to move forward. There might be a disconnect between who you are and who you want to be and you're not sure how the pieces fit together. Our work together would include exploring the things getting in the way of living more authentically, and incorporate coping skills for managing day to day experiences. I take an integrative approach, incorporating various techniques and strategies that fit best with you and your goals.

I aim to provide a non-judgemental holding space fueled by curiosity for your experiences. We are in a particularly interesting time where community and support is needed more than ever to help us navigate the world. Therapy is one piece of the puzzle to more sustainable wellness overall. In therapy we are allowed space to explore the meaning we’ve made from past experiences, societal expectations, and world views. I’ve worked in residential facilities for young families and community mental health with ages throughout the lifespan.

“Focus attention on the feeling inside you. Know that it is the pain-body. Accept that it is there. Don't think about it - don't let the feeling turn into thinking. Don't judge or analyze. Don't make an identity for yourself out of it. Stay present, and continue to be the observer of what is happening inside you. Become aware not only of the emotional pain but also of "the one who observes," the silent watcher. This is the power of the Now, the power of your own conscious presence. Then see what happens.” ― Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now. I am honored to join you in Present Space to "see what happens."

Imagine climbing a mountain with every obstacle coming your way whether it’s falling rocks or inclement weather. This is something we can call life. We endure every obstacle that comes our way whether we face it head on, fall down, leap over or move around it. How do you cope? What gets you through your day to day? Do you ever feel like things keep piling up? As your Therapist, when you reach out for help, I will be supportive and non-judgmental. I will meet you wherever you are on your mountain, and take it day by day.

The events, relationships, and transitions you experience often create typical and expected feelings. Sometimes, however, experiences and feelings are not anticipated and can leave you confused, sad, or overwhelmed. During these times, choosing to work with a knowledgeable therapist can help you regain a sense of control, confidence, and hope.

Adoption Therapists

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
