I use a person-centered approach to assist my clients in identifying their goals and paint an image of what they envision for themselves. I enjoy helping individuals work through infertility and or other women's issues (post-partum, pregnancy). Often, I treat clients struggling with life events, trauma, substance abuse/addiction, depression and anxiety. I have been working with in need families (adolescents and adults) throughout New Haven and Fairfield County for the past decade. I have an eclectic approach, meaning I use a variety of treatment modalities to work on issues presented.

Since 1995, I have been involved in the field of adoption. For the first twelve years of my practice, I worked with families adopting domestically and internationally. Throughout that time, I began to realize that, although adoptive families experience the same challenges that all families face as their children develop, they cope with additional challenges which have their roots in adoption. I am able to provide you with sensitive, adoption-competent therapy which is based on the latest research in the field. I also have extensive experiences helping you navigate life's challenges and transitions.

I have 30 years experience working with people experiencing a range of issues: trauma, loss, depression, anxiety, adoption issues, divorce.
Life is a journey. There are times when it's easy and good, and times when it's harder than you want it to be. If you're at one of the lower moments in your life, it can sometimes help if you reach out to someone who is understanding, a good listener and who has many years experience helping people problem-solve their way back to a place where life feels more manageable. If you are feeling more sad than happy, more anxious than calm, then maybe you should call me. We'll chat a little and see if we think we'd make a good therapeutic team.

I have been in private practice for over 30 years and believe that people can truly change their lives. People can take very difficult experiences in their lives and use them to develop a more meaningful life. I draw from my own experiences while I work with my clients and believe that change can happen at any age. People can use grief, loss, trauma and life's most difficult experiences to develop meaning that they may never have had. Finding your own spirituality and your own style of coping is what makes it unique.

Life is full of contradictions and complementary qualities. Making sense of the inconsistencies within others, ourselves, and our environments can be both challenging and enlightening. People are motivated to engage in therapy for a variety of reasons, including a desire for greater self-understanding, improved relationships, and practical guidance for managing intense feelings and difficult circumstances. Most of us will at some point feel burdened by emotional wounds, conflictual attachments (e.g., to people, striving, overconsumption, deprivation, habits of thinking and feeling that keep us stuck), and life stressors.

The individual client should be over the age of 12 but families with smaller children are welcome for sessions as well. Do you feel stuck? My approach to helping: Choosing to begin therapy and meet a new therapist can be one of the most stressful things a person can do. It is also one of the most courageous! The journey of counseling and therapy is a path of growth. I love working with people who have the courage to engage in therapy and helping them learn, grow, and heal. By becoming more aware of yourself and the people around you, you are able to choose new ways of being and interacting, and feel calmer and more content day to day.

Adoption Therapists

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
