Formerly Alexandra Corriveau. Starting therapy with someone new can be an intimidating process. I believe that building a therapeutic relationship starts with getting to know each client and creating an engaging space. I have an eclectic approach to therapy and utilize solution focused techniques. I have experience working with all ages, and I currently see both adults and teenagers. I am close to UCONN and Eastern and love to work with college students. In addition to providing therapy services, I also offer clinical supervision and art therapy supervision for individuals working towards their ATR or LPC credentials.

Life involves constant changes, and is not always easy. Change is necessary for growth, but can cause confusion and discomfort, which may impair our ability to move towards the fulfilling lives we envision. Feelings of hopelessness and isolation often lead to unhelpful means of coping, which create a new set of problems. No matter what your struggle, you don't have to do this alone. I believe that a supportive, therapeutic relationship, with you in the driver's seat, can provide clarity and direction. My person-centered approach can help you feel more secure as you navigate your own path. I look forward to walking it with you.

To those around you, you are a loving, caring, strong, supportive mother. But inside you are dealing with anxiety, overwhelm, and fluctuating moods. Perhaps a past traumatic experience continues to live in your present, or maybe those around you are noticing a change in you since the birth of your baby. Maybe you are struggling with time management or trying to adjust to your new role and identity. No matter where you are in your journey through motherhood, the time is now to learn that you can be the best version or yourself, not only for yourself but for those you love and who love you.

I utilize strengths-based and evidence-based practices to help folks with anxiety, assertiveness/boundary skills, adoption, relationship issues, grief/loss, and much more.
I am currently accepting new clients ages 13+ for telehealth or in-person sessions! Asking for help can be difficult for many reasons, but I believe that there is so much strength and courage in allowing ourselves to be vulnerable. Vulnerability gives us the ability to form deeper connections with others, become more resilient, and be our authentic selves. I work to provide a space in which you feel safe enough to be vulnerable so that you may share your story, explore yourself, and connect with yourself and others in new ways.

I have 30 years experience working with people experiencing a range of issues: trauma, loss, depression, anxiety, adoption issues, divorce.
Life is a journey. There are times when it's easy and good, and times when it's harder than you want it to be. If you're at one of the lower moments in your life, it can sometimes help if you reach out to someone who is understanding, a good listener and who has many years experience helping people problem-solve their way back to a place where life feels more manageable. If you are feeling more sad than happy, more anxious than calm, then maybe you should call me. We'll chat a little and see if we think we'd make a good therapeutic team.

Adoption Therapists

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
