I work collaboratively with clients who are struggling with feelings of anxiety, life transitions, genuine connections, relationship issues, attachment, bonding and adoption-related issues. I believe in the strength of families and individuals and I will collaborate with you by building on those strengths during the therapeutic process. I believe we all have strengths we can draw from which make us a stronger healthier human being. I believe in looking at therapy as a part of a holistic maintenance we as humans should all participate in. We are exercising our brains and emotions to strengthen who we are and who we strive to be.

Many will enter therapy thinking, “What have I been doing wrong to get here?” I meet clients and think, “What have you been doing right to make it this far?” Yes, I think a bit backwards, but it’s what allows me to find innovative ways to help clients move forward using their strengths. Individuals, couples, and families who have previously felt stuck in complex issues with anxiety, depression, trauma, grief & loss, adoption, parenting, and relationships report finding relief through embracing their strengths and being reassured that their experience is valid. This helps tap into their innate ability to heal and renew balance.

"There will never be another day like the one you are living. There will never be another chance to pass this way again." It is well known that we do not have an infinite amount of time. The world throws us some curves and, in order to hang on and make the most of what we have, reaching out and asking for interaction and communication with someone capable of listening is good practice. Counseling preferences include, but are not limited to; cognitive behavioral therapy, storytelling, traditional talk therapy, desensitization. Particularly with the unique challenges connected with the adoption, foster-care and trauma.
Empowering parent's and caregiver's ability to connect with their child in a deep and meaningful way is the central focus of Spencer’s approach to overcoming challenges. This begins when parents/caregivers are able to resolve any challenges in the relationship that may be a barrier to therapy. Once this occurs, caregivers and their child can begin, in a safe and therapeutic environment, to explore the trauma, abuse, neglect, abandonment and loss which are the emotional source to behavioral struggles.

No matter who we are or where we come from, we all deserve to live happy and fulfilling lives. Life is hard and can present us with emotional challenges we’re not sure how to process. The first step is asking for help. If you're going through the adoption process, are an adoptee (youth or adult), experiencing relationship issues (monogamous and non-monogamous), are of a marginalized community, or have a special needs child in the family, I'd love to help you process through the complex feelings that accompany your unique intersection of identities.

Human beings are hard-wired for connection, which is as essential for survival as food, water, and air. When a person is deprived of that connection it creates bondage that can be crushing, robbing us of the freedom we were created to enjoy. My clinical experience includes trauma, attachment issues, adoption, parenting, marriage, family conflict, anxiety/depression, and spiritual formation.

Adoption Therapists

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
