Anxious, stressed, hot mess? Your emotions have felt too overwhelming to acknowledge, so you try to ignore them, but they spill over into your daily life. You become activated and have difficulty managing those emotions when they come to the surface. Negative thoughts pop into your head and you spiral, believing your inner critic's every word. But you're ready to break free from the old story. If you are feeling the ripple effects of your past, or struggling to show up in the present, I know how to help! I specialize in helping teen and adult women gain their confidence, find their voice, and feel empowered in their lives.

In my professional life, I have concentrated in a number of specialty areas- clients with combined medical and psychological difficulties, addictions, child and adolescent disorders, sexual disorders and sexual abuse, and adoption related issues.
I have been in practice thirty years. I see psychotherapy as a process of increasing self awareness, developing a more realistic and tolerant self esteem, and identifying and working through losses, disappointments and relational conflicts. This process enables reduction in pain, greater self acceptance, and comfort in relationships and family. This process occurs in a collaborative effort between you the client, and myself. The safe environment of the office allows for the full expression and understanding of what you experience, think, and feel. Our work together enables symptom relief, greater personal understanding, growth, responsibility and contentment.

Never before has the adage, “I was a teenager once too!” been more out of step with the experience of adolescents today. I’ve been helping teens for 35 yrs and have a good read on the challenges they face and the strategies that are effective in relieving the anxiety, disillusionment, depression, anger, and disconnection that plague so many families. I help teens who are anxious, argumentative, defiant, withdrawn, moody, self-destructive, inattentive, depressed, or doing poorly in school and will help you decide whether the problems you're noticing are part of "typical" teen behavior or a sign of something more serious.

The teenage years are the most vulnerable, exciting, and growing years of a young person’s life. Self discovery can often yield low self esteem, independence can easily shift to rebellion, and a slow maturation process often creates impulsive decision making. And when a parent’s warnings and worries don’t seem to have an impact on the teenager’s course, or when it feels too heavy to carry alone, it’s helpful to have another guiding force to help. Through counseling, an adolescent can feel understood, begin to understand themselves, and learn to understand and accept their role in the family and society.

After graduating with my Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Immaculata University, I have worked in various mental health settings including as Supervisor and Lead therapist for a tween/adolescent partial hospitalization program, young adult intensive outpatient therapist and in community mental health.
Starting therapy can be an overwhelming and intimidating process. With this in mind, my goal is to create a warm, welcoming, and safe environment. I value a collaborative therapeutic process. I see each individual as unique and work to tailor treatment to meet individual needs. My passion as a counselor is working with tweens, teens and young adults (ages 12+). I work with clients to overcome anxiety, depression, improve self-esteem, social relationships, and navigate through life’s challenges.

Hi! My name is Lisa Broadrup. During my 25+ years in the field of mental health, I have had the opportunity to work with individuals, couples, and families in a variety of settings. Many times, clients initially come in because they are in desperate need of relief from their pain and suffering. Yes, therapy can and often does help relieve pain, but it can also help clients explore issues that are effecting their overall quality of life. Over the years I have witnessed the strength and resilience of the human spirit as clients have demonstrated again and again that they can make gains that they did not think possible.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
