I'm Ed Sage, an expert in adolescent/young adult behaviors with over 25 years of experience. I provide assessments for teens to help identify mental health challenges. Parents often ask "when is a behavior actually a problem and when do I need to get help?" I can help resolve fighting at home, social issues, defiance, and addictions to: porn, video games, alcohol and substances, and technology. I treat depression, anxiety, and any other underlying problems that get in the way of your child's success in life.

As a therapist, I start with the basic assumption that we all have a fundamental impulse for growth and well-being. Sometimes we need resources, guidance, and someone with expertise to rediscover this. In my practice I am looking to engage clients to gain insight, discover motivation, and hone emotional skills. I am interested in providing the most conducive setting for people to cultivate their innate creativity, intelligence, and courage in navigating anxiety, depression, and the range life’s challenges.

Hello everyone, please welcome and allow me to first begin in thanking you. The choice to start therapy isn’t always easy, sometimes it is the most difficult thing to do is to even consider it, then admit you want/need it before even taking the steps to start, but you are not alone on this journey. Perhaps there has been times that you have found yourself feeling stressed, down, lacking confidence, or stuck in a pattern that no longer serves you. Perhaps you’re ready to take steps toward changes but feel stuck or unsure where to start. Or even feeling lost in your relationships in life or even disconnected from them.

Over the past five decades, I have conducted a licensed clinical psychology practice. As a counselor, author and innovator, those who seek my services feel better, think better and have better relationships. The focus is on helping people identify, then achieve what they want, rather than trying to manage problems. Using cutting-edge tools, I lead clients to where positive states are expressed in their bodies, then build the skill sets they will need to hold that somatic form through time, as they make useful, life-enhancing decisions. Depression and anxiety hold us back from reaching our potential. So many factors in our daily lives work to develop and reinforce those negative emotions over time. They leave us feeling stuck, overwhelmed, and unfulfilled. In order to cope, we often develop behaviors that we know aren’t good for us but feel impossible to stop. You try to make things better, but moments of change and growth are fleeting. You’re ready to create lasting change and free yourself from what’s holding you back. You deserve to experience a satisfying life filled with joy and happiness!

If you want to solve your personal problems, control your headaches, or other symptoms of stress, anxiety or depression, deal more effectively with your loved ones, friends and coworkers, then I would like to help. If you are self-motivated, sensitive, desire to improve yourself, and value personal responsibility, then I believe you are well suited to the type of help provide. If you not interested in clever explanations that only allow you to blame others, and do not lead you to a happier, more enlightened and effective life, then we are already on the same wavelength

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
