I see clients with a wide range of reasons for entering therapy, including partner and work relationships, parenting challenges, confusion around life focus, and a desire for deeper work using dreams and other unconscious sources from within, and more. I see adults and teen girls. My work is informed by various trainings, study and thought, applied depending on the client's needs and goals.

I specialize in working with women and teen girls. If you or your teenager are feeling emotionally unstable, vulnerable or anxious, I have tools and skill sets for you. In the early years of my career, I worked as a substance abuse counselor and still hold an independent license in that field. My work has evolved away from active addiction towards addressing the trauma and wounds that are associated with addictive processes. For teens that might be self harm, depression or anxiety, and for adult women it can manifest as perfectionism, anxiety, staying overly busy, or being self critical. These efforts to cope can all be upgraded!

I had a psychology practice in Austin for 20 years, relocating to Albuquerque in 2012. As an outgrowth of my continuing work with clients from Texas, I have developed a specialty in providing internet therapy. My specialties include eating disorders, complex mood disorders, personality disorders, recovery from narcissistic abuse, and helping families with "failure to launch" young adults. I also provide consultation to parents who are struggling with an oppositional adolescent or an adult child with ongoing difficulties. I provide both therapeutic and forensic psychological evaluations.

My ideal clients are those who are experiencing difficulties with blended family issues, adolescent development, trauma, grief and loss, separation and divorce. My role as a therapist is to facilitate a process of healing by partnering with each client. I believe it is essential to listen carefully to an individual, couple or family and develop a partnership that combines my training and experience as a practitioner with each persons unique capacity for healing and growth. Most importantly, the objective of intervention and caring is promoting the family's ability to support the passions and interests that exist in each individual.

Seeking therapy is often prompted by sudden crisis or by having reached the limit of endurance over an issue or situation. I work to help re-establish a greater sense of inner wellbeing and a deeper sense of one's self, from which clients are able to more successfully address depression, anxiety, life transitions and difficult relationships.

I welcome your interest in seeking therapy! I offer art therapy and talk therapy, and have been a therapist for 29 years. I'm so passionate about the healing potential within the connection of a therapeutic relationship that I chaired the Art Therapy/Counseling Program at Southwestern College for many years where I taught and supervised new therapists. I've written 3 books and speak internationally because I love sharing what I've learned over the years about the value of the therapeutic process. I believe that my clients are the experts on themselves and I provide a warm, safe place to explore hard issues and move toward joy.

I know that the process of beginning therapy can be overwhelming because I’ve been there. It takes vulnerability and courage to ask for help. I also know that therapy works because I’ve seen it--in my own life and in the lives of my clients. I congratulate you on taking this significant step toward finding relief and reconnecting with your most authentic self. I’m so glad you’re here. My practice is grounded in my belief that the therapeutic relationship provides a unique opportunity to explore experiences and parts of ourselves that are hard to look at alone. We are all capable of healing, growth and transformation at any point.

Qualified to provide individual, couples, and family therapy. My Master's in Clinical Psychotherapy emphasized the Psychodynamic approach, which means the therapeutic relationship is the catalyst for deeper healing. (It's the therapeutic modality of Attachment Theory). Practically speaking, our relationship is grist for the mill and practice so you can take what you learn in our connection out into the relationships of your life. My approach can be summed up as deepening self-awareness, developing life-affirming skills, and practicing intentional responses.

I value working with teens and adults in a supportive non-judgmental way. I assist people who may be challenged with shame, anxiety, depression, grief/loss, substance use issues/recovery, communication issues, parent/child relationship difficulties, trauma, lack of self-care, and low self-esteem. Often people are struggling with something in their lives that is out of balance or going through a transition and reinventing themselves. Basically, I help people find their way again. I am a LGBTQ+ affirming, and gender-affirming therapist. I am also a culturally responsive and social justice-oriented therapist.

We often have a sense that in some ways, somehow we have been holding back. The barriers hidden behind cost us in our capacity for intimacy, spontaneity, and precious space for the heart's need to express and to be seen. They are usually constructed for very good reasons; to avoid painful experiences and vulnerability. But more often than not, carry on decades beyond when the threatening events have past. Defenses, beliefs, and the wounds that shut us down developed around people. The healing can happen when we feel safety again. Not surprisingly, this needs to happen with people too.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
