Are you a “late bloomer” when it comes to dating and struggling to stay ahead in how to best navigate the process? Are you a teenager that struggles to communicate with your parents and feel like a burden? A teen that keeps your feelings ? A teen that keeps your feelings locked inside and struggles to give your self compassion?.
At times we may feel that there’s no one that can understand us or fear not looking like the “strong” friend. We struggle to talk about our emotions and often wear masks out of the belief that nothing will change. Do you struggle to take up space in conversations or in a room due to lack of confidence? Or constant feelings of inadequacy due to struggles in managing high expectations placed upon you? Are you a person that struggles to show your body love and compassion? Have you had a history of disordered eating and want to work towards unsubscribing from diet culture and embrace the skin you’re in?

I’ve been in the mental health field for over 20 years and have been providing clinical care since 2011. I’ve worked with first responders crisis settings and provided services to first responders in a therapeutic environment. I work a lot with domestic violence, sexual trauma, and human trafficking. I pull from several modalities including CBT, trauma-focused CBT, DBT, motivational interviewing, solutions focused, strength-based, and reality therapy. I like working with people who are motivated to improve their lives. Because I work with such a wide range of issues, I can be helpful and supportive in many different areas.

Life can be daunting and stressful, and there are solutions. I believe it is within us all to become energized to lead happy, productive lives. Sometimes we need some extra support to reach our goals. My favorite part about being a psychotherapist is helping people realize their strengths and become empowered to lead healthy lives. This power is within all of us, and I can help you tap into it. I have a very broad background in the mental health field for the past 30 years. My practice gravitates toward helping people who are in relationship with people who have Narcissistic personality traits.

Are you wanting to begin or restart your therapy journey? Are you hoping to understand more about yourself and create positive changes to enjoy your life more fully? We are made up of thoughts and behaviors, as well as pre-determined biases and beliefs, from our experience in life. As we navigate life, these areas may start to change. The internal wants/needs vs external experience of life may become shifted and not entirely in alignment any longer. This can cause anxiety, obsessive behaviors, disordered thinking/acting, and lack of connection with ourselves, in addition to many other symptoms of mental health unmet needs.

You are not what you feel. You are not even what you think. You are what you do. Acceptance & Commitment Therapy is about taking thoughts and feelings and using them for what they're supposed to be: data. They are merely to let us know how we're responding to our environment. It is up to our higher cognitions, our rational thoughts, to decide what to do with that information. My clients range from those with neurodevelopmental issues, mood disorders, and life adjustment events. The premise is the same in all cases: understand ourselves, what we feel and think, figure out WHY we think that way, and then decide what to do with it.

Welcome! Have you noticed yourself slipping into the motions of daily life? You might be feeling like you are getting by, but you are left with wanting more connection, more intimacy, more fulfillment from work or hobbies, or more bandwidth to tune into and prioritize your needs and goals. I work with individuals (teens and adults) interested in connecting deeper with their most authentic self, enhancing communication and boundaries, exploring how they show up in their interpersonal relationships, and feeling more at home in their body.

Sometimes the parts of our lives that promise the most happiness become sources of anxiety, disappointment, or frustration. I am passionate about creating a warm, welcoming space where you can speak openly about these things and be taken seriously. I will invite you to tell your story, to reflect on formative relationships and experiences, and to grow in awareness of current thought patterns, emotions, and behaviors. Together we will set goals related to your challenges, and you will experiment with new skills and ways of thinking to leave you feeling more confident and effective in important roles and relationships.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
