I believe that therapy can be beneficial to most people during this journey we call life. There are various obstacles and challenges that can make it difficult, and at times very overwhelming for us to deal with. You are not alone! Many individuals that I have worked with over the years find it comforting to be able to confide in someone kind, empathetic, and objective; who can work collaboratively toward their goals. You are an expert in your life, so it's important to note that therapy is a collaborative experience where we work toward your identified goals.

•••Accepting New Clients••• My passion to become a therapist has been inspired by my own experiences, which has guided me to a path where I can support others through their own growth and healing. I utilize a person-centered approach to therapy because we are each shaped differently by our own experiences, and in turn, our mental health and recovery may also look quite different from each other. My approach emphasizes the importance of building trust and providing an environment that is easy-going so that my clients are able to fully explore and work on the various life challenges in a way that is comfortable and safe.

When faced with difficult challenges our emotional, physical, and mental health is impacted. The impacts of life transitions, past traumas, and stress can show up in our lives as anger, depression, anxiety, behavioral concerns, and relationship issues. Therapy can be helpful to individuals by allowing space to learn to identify emotions as well as learn tools to manage symptoms. If you're struggling to manage unhelpful thoughts or behaviors centering around anxiety, body image, depression, life changes, self-esteem, self-harm, and stress management I would urge you to consider therapy.

As a therapist, I know that few things are as important to the process of therapy as the working relationship between the client and their therapist. This is why I approach every session and every client with empathy, warmth, and unconditional positive regard. I strive to create a therapeutic space that is safe and non-judgmental – where you are the expert of your own experience, where you feel validated at the intersection of your various identities, and where you feel understood as a whole person.

If you are experiencing high anxiety, or just not feeling like yourself or maybe you can't even label the uncomfortable feelings, you're not alone. You know you want to get rid of those feelings but talking to friends, aimlessly scrolling social media, ignoring it or maybe even using substances haven't been quite effective.

In my practice, I draw on my experience and training―but I believe the most effective psychotherapy focuses on developing fulfilling and meaningful connections. Research has shown repeatedly that the therapeutic alliance between therapist and client is a significant predictor in the success of therapy. When exploring psychotherapy, I encourage you to meet with more than one therapist and to ask potential therapists questions about their personal process. I specialize in Sex Therapy and I have post-graduate training related specifically to sexual concerns. My office is a space where no topic is off limits or taboo.

Many of the adults/teens that I work with are dealing with anxiety, low self-esteem, and/or PTSD. Others may be struggling in their relationships, or grieving a loss. Some are seeking to learn new coping skills or healthy communication methods, while some are involved in toxic relationships and are looking for support to help process and navigate how to improve their boundaries. These conditions and experiences often leave us living in either the future or the past, affect our relationships, impact how we deal with everyday life, and prevent us from living the lives we wish for ourselves.

Sometimes in life we struggle and feel overwhelmed by our problems or circumstances. During these times, it is beneficial to sit with a compassionate and objective therapist to help identify potential solutions that lead to change, improvement, and growth. Often, people have erroneous thought patterns or long held mistaken beliefs about themselves, which prevent them from achieving the life they want. My approach is to create a sensitive and nonjudgmental environment to assist you in properly identifying the root cause of the problem or to provide the coping skills that make the situation less overwhelming and more tolerable.

My name is Christopher Baumann, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). I understand that often we go through life managing internal struggles, while attempting to navigate our circumstances. By seeking greater understanding into us and our relationships, we may come face to face with our deepest doubts and fears. Avoiding struggles and pain opens up the possibility for dysfunction, negativity, and neglect. Being a human is messy. It's not as neat as our "should" and "shouldn't" would have us believe. You are allowed to talk about things that upset you. You are allowed to hold people accountable.

Stuck? Can't unstick yourself? Sometimes we get in our own way without knowing how to get free. I have helped people thread their way through their self-made jungles for decades. Some form of unfinished business trips us up, maybe from trauma, daily stressors, family difficulties, self sabotage, or toxic relationships. I have trained hard to help people see the potholes in the roads, and the pathways up the mountains. There is a way to face obstacles that releases their hold.

When people look at you, it looks like you have it all, but life feels painful. You are successful, driven, and dependable. You have worked so hard to create the life of your dreams, but it feels like life is falling apart. Your marriage maybe falling apart or your important relationships strained. Something has to change because living this way is not working. You have tried to follow the rules and do everything by the book. You have tried to keep everyone happy. Yet, it all feels lost. You can’t go on like this. This is not what you want for your life. You are at the end of your rope, and it’s time for a change.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in East Lansing?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
