Do you or someone you care about feel there needs to be a change in the direction of their life? Whether a change in behaviors, perspectives, feelings and/or emotions in children, adolescents or adults, I can help discover, in a collaborative process, what may be the source of distress. We can then work together to achieve your goals. I can provide guidance and feedback on how best to manage your life-stressors in a practical, non-judgmental manner.

My ideal client is ready for change. It can absolutely terrify them, but they see the light and know they are worthy of healing and growing. Whether it is academic stress, conflicts between parents and children, healing past trauma, or navigating a difficult chapter in your life. Therapy can be a helpful place to learn new coping skills, challenge your thoughts, a space to feel heard, or a person to share with without getting "advice" from loved ones. Wherever you are in your journey, if therapy could help remind yourself that you are worth the try!

As a child of immigrants, I understand the duality of living in a culture that is so very different from one’s own. These experiences help to shape my work with my clients, and I am able to provide various different lenses from which to consider common problems. Whether you are struggling with depression, anxiety, PTSD, familial problems, phase of life problems, or are looking to gain more insight into who you are, therapy can prove to be a useful tool to move towards healing.

Do you experience negative thoughts about yourself, frequent worries about the future, or maybe even become so numb that you feel nothing at all? I believe that everyone has some sort of trauma from their past that continues to affect their well-being and relationships with others. I will be curious about what you are showing up to therapy with; because I believe that our symptoms tell a story. They tell us what helped us to survive in a sometimes harsh and unjust world, but maybe no longer serve us. In order words, the things we do that once protected us, are usually the same things that hold us back today.

Peace. I know how important it is to create a safe space for you to talk about your struggles. Whether the discussion is about your sexuality, especially if you are part of the LGBTQ+ community, your mood, your past including traumatic experiences and upcoming life transitions, therapy and the process of collaborative learning about you is my goal. My work experiences in hospital settings, college counseling settings, community mental health and private practice in both Saudi Arabia and the U.S. have taught me to integrate what I have learned about education, advocacy, and treatment into my therapeutic approach.

We often seek therapy when we feel overwhelmed by depression, anxiety, relationship conflict, or a life transition. I create an empathic, non-judgmental space where you can gain insight, recognize your strengths, and become more confident and secure. I believe each person is the expert on their own life and experience. Together, we’ll identify the patterns that are holding you back, as well as your unique strengths. I tailor my approach to best meet your needs and abilities. Sometimes, that means I provide practical, active strategies so you can feel more calm, balanced, and empowered.

Strength is recognizing that you can't do it alone. My main goal as a therapist is to provide a safe, open, and nonjudgmental space that focuses on each individual's life experiences while maintaining the personal beliefs/values of the client to encourage growth and strength. I value the connections my clients create with me as their therapist; creating a connection with your therapist is important to the therapeutic process and will be the driving force of each therapy session. I work with clients collaboratively to explore their thoughts, feelings, hopes, and obstacles to create goals reflecting their desires for therapy.

As a daughter of immigrants, I am familiar with the struggles of feeling like an outsider, facing ongoing acculturation, as well as the stress and anxiety that comes with resettlement and starting over. I strive to normalize therapy and make it accessible to anyone struggling with their cultural or personal identity, including the immigrant community and anyone seeking therapy for the first time. Allowing yourself to be vulnerable with someone new is often one of the most challenging aspects of starting therapy. There is a stigma associated with seeking professional help for mental health in many communities.

Therapy is a process of self-discovery. Often, I have found that clients who present for therapy may identify experiences of depression or anxiety that are secondary to trauma exposure in their childhood or recent history. Moreover, clients often have challenges in their relationships with others which stem from their relationship with self, and from early childhood experiences in their family of origin. These challenges can manifest in many areas.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
