If you are looking for ways to be effective in managing stress and finding balance in your life, cognitive behavioral therapy is likely to empower you with improving your ability to reach your goals. This involves a practical approach in utilizing your strengths and becoming aware of some self defeating patterns with thoughts and behaviors that keep you from moving forward in your life, and perhaps with relationships and career. I have many years of experience working with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. I am not currently offering teletherapy.

My time spent working in the school system gave me great insight into what young people face every day. I am passionate about children, adolescents, and their families. Many times, young individuals are unable to verbalize their feelings. Play therapy is a gift to your child, that will aid them in communicating and exploring their inner world and emotions. Toys are used as a voice. I am also passionate about communicating with families and seeing marriages succeed. I would love to help you navigate any issue you may be facing.

Understanding that we do not live in a bubble and that many things can affect our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors is the basis of how I approach therapy. Instead of focusing on the problem, my focus in therapy is on the strengths of a family, couple, or individual, which can lead to a solution-focused collaboration between the therapist and client(s). As a therapist, it is my responsibility to provide a safe, non-judgmental space for my clients to begin the process of change that will eventually lead them to more complete, happier lives.

Finding help shouldn't be difficult, but it is, and I want to make that process easy for you, from the first contact. I have more than twenty years experience in behavioral medicine, and more than 30 years in helping professions. Using a wide range of expertise and training I treat diverse concerns of pre-teen through older adult clients. By varying treatment with a number of approaches, I strive to tailor therapy to the person, not just the problems identified. I work with mood and anxiety disorders, chronic pain and illness, trauma, addictions, eating and weight issues, and more.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
