Are you sick of feeling unheard and unseen? As a neurodivergent provider in a society that is not always neurodivergency affirming, I feel connected to clients who feel as if they are navigating life without understanding themselves or their experiences. My own experiences and training have drawn me to my passion of working with neurodivergent children and adults utilizing a neurodivergency affirming approach.

Why doesn't anyone get me? It feels like I'm the only one going through this. I'm so overwhelmed and irritated that I can't find my balance anymore. Will I ever feel happy again? Is this your reality? It doesn't have to be.

My time spent working in the school system gave me great insight into what young people face every day. I am passionate about children, adolescents, and their families. Many times, young individuals are unable to verbalize their feelings. Play therapy is a gift to your child, that will aid them in communicating and exploring their inner world and emotions. Toys are used as a voice. I am also passionate about communicating with families and seeing marriages succeed. I would love to help you navigate any issue you may be facing.

I know from my own experiences as well as a career dedicated to helping children, adults, and families, that often putting yourself first and asking for some help can bring up feelings of guilt, shame, and fear to name a few. Understanding and knowing that you are your own self with needs, wants and worth; that you deserve to heal, remember who you are and find more joy- these concepts are available to you. You matter, your story matters and I can offer a safe space for you to be your vulnerable and authentic self.

As the parent of a teenager, I understand how challenging life can be for a loved one.
Childhood & adolescence is hard sometimes, & it can be even harder to find someone to talk to about everyday issues like problems with friends, anxiety, depression, or any other negative emotion. These emotions, if kept deep down, can be overwhelming and release in different ways like anger, negative self talk, or something more intense. Let's work together to slowly allow those feelings to release in a secure, safe, and friendly environment.

Hello! I’m a licensed clinical social worker and I have worked in school social work, foster care, adoption, adolescent residential treatment, crisis assessment at Pine Rest Hospital, and outpatient treatment. I have been in private practice for 20 years. It is my privilege to listen to, and be with, people in their stories. Making sense of our narrative is a fundamental component to a healthy mind and spirit. And making peace with our perfectly imperfect, and unique version of humanity is essential for our emotional life and our thought space. It would be my privilege to hear your story. Peace, Amy

The world has become an increasingly complex place to navigate these days. I am passionate about helping individuals, families and young people get through these challenging times together. I enjoy collaborating with schools and parents alike to best support children, teens, and young adults. Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
