It’s so painful to see your adolescent in distress. You want to help, but they can be resistant to your ideas, and it feels like they’re withdrawing more every day. You worry that their anxiety, difficulty managing responsibilities, or poor self esteem will prevent them from living up to their potential. It can feel like you’ve tried everything or don’t know where to start, and your concerns about them feel increasingly overwhelming.

Is your kid/teen a blackbelt in avoiding responsibility, arguing their way out of any disagreement, or spending more time doing what they want to rather than what you’ve asked them to over and over again? If only they’d sit still and finally listen when you tell them what they should be doing instead. When it comes to kids/teens who have mastered these ancient arts however, this approach rarely seems to work. Finding ways to help young people that isn’t perceived as scolding, lecturing, or punishing is my focus, and teaching them how to make peace with their inner world is my goal.

I am well-versed in working with adults, children and teen issues related to family conflict, depression, trauma, anxiety and faith crises.
I believe there is power in addressing the interconnections of the mind, body, and spirit and how they impact our daily life. We sometimes allow our fears, insecurities, and anxious behaviors hinder our ability to be the best versions of ourselves. I find it important to connect with my client’s resilience throughout the therapeutic process and explore their inner world. I have a particular passion for working with Asian Americans and people of color to help navigate the complexities of life challenges.

Do you argue with your teen? Lecture, yell, or worry too much? Are you not sure how to get through to your teen? I help parents understand their teens. It is possible to have a different, positive relationship with your teen. You can become stronger & better equipped to take care of your teen. You can discover your unique teen and feel proud of who they can become. I can't make parenting easy, but I can make you feel more at ease parenting. My only goal is to be an educated guide. My stance with my clients is a combination of finding strengths and exploring how our past may shows up in our current behavior.

I approach psychotherapy from a whole-person perspective and I believe therapy, along with other practices, can help us awaken to a life of meaning. I also hold specialties in maternal mental health, parenting, and child/adolescent therapy.
Whether you are struggling with relationships or dating, parenting, finding your purpose, or feeling anxious, stressed, or depressed, beginning therapy can be the first step to finding relief. My work is guided by the notion that therapy should be, above all, helpful. Some days, you may find that you want specific techniques and strategies. Other days, you may benefit from a patient, listening ear. Sometimes, you may wish to delve into earlier experiences to understand why you are feeling the way you do. I believe these are all important aspects of the therapeutic journey, and I am here to here to help you in the ways you need most.

In life there is pain. Painful experiences growing up that stay inside and manifest in our everyday behavior and internal struggles. In my work, whether the person is a child, teen, young adult, parent, or woman, I aim to provide a space of compassion and safety from which to understand the world around us (relationships, school, work, friendships) and the internal world within us (thoughts, emotions, pain, discomfort). The goal in my work is to help you/your child get in touch with, tune in, and understand themselves; in particular thoughts and feelings.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
