I am particularly effective with the adolescent population (ages 12-25, yes that is right!) and their particular needs, school and family stress and the scary transitions into adulthood.
We all want to be understood and feel like we are making progress towards our life goals. My approach is comforting, humorous, humble, creative and lovingly direct. Everyone needs connection and in my experience the benefits of connecting and being seen by someone in therapy are many. Are you interested in working on an issue related to a relationship, major life change, depression and/or anxiety? Visit my website www.rachelwardlmft.com or call at 626-327-3456 for a free 25 minute consultation to see if we are a good fit. Making sure we connect is very important.

For 23+ years I've specialized in working with children, adolescents, adults, couples and families to help them live with more confidence, connection, and aliveness. I bring extensive experience in therapy, supervision, consulting, and research in the areas of child, teen, & family life, social and emotional development, and building solid and nurturing relationships. I work with clients in a talk therapy approach that is warm, interactive, and active, but that is also flexible in including support for new behaviors, creative expression, and practical help in developing new skills for living.

Individual adult, adolescent, and couples clients, straight and gay, and all genders are welcome.
In everyone's life, some heartache will happen. Some days, the things we do to cope with stress no longer work as well as they once did; other days, it may feel like everything is falling apart. No matter what your struggle is, we will work together to understand the source of your problems and develop practical strategies to reach your goals. In your first session, we will begin to answer the question, "What would help look like right now?" and help you cultivate and develop tools you may not even know you had within your reach.

Adult and teen clients learn to express their concerns, feelings and needs in ways that given them the best chance of being understood.
Over the last 27 years as a clinical psychologist, I have helped many individuals, couples, and families. Individual clients often enter therapy feeling disconnected and lost. They have reached a point where the usual ways of coping are not working and are open to trying something new. Couples often come to see me feeling exhausted, alienated, and hopeless about their relationship. They wonder whether their relationship can recover and heal. My work with families includes addressing the profound sense of detachment between parents and teenagers, particularly when compounded by the presence of teen depression.

If you or your adolescent child seek a relationship with these emmisaries from the psyche, I would be honored to serve as a guide on the path.
I am honored to be able to work with adolescents and adults to provide them with contained space where they can work through obstacles that hinder inner strength and wisdom. For many of us, psychopathology can be traced back to trauma or relational issues of the past. I never tire of exploring this material with my brave clients.

Whether you are a parent seeking therapy for your child/teen or a young person looking for extra support on your own journey, let's work together to build upon what you've already started and get you to where you'd like to be.
Resiliency describes a person's ability to survive, and even thrive, in the face of extraordinary challenges and adversities. I believe that each client, no matter their age or the challenges they face, exhibits a great deal of resiliency before ever beginning therapy. My approach focuses on harnessing each client's unique strengths to help them accomplish the positive, lasting changes they most desire. While the goals of the child or young person are the central focus of treatment, I often work closely with parents/caregivers to enhance communication, strengthen relationships, and foster ongoing systems of support.

I work with individual adults, couples, and teens in private practice, while also working as a clinician at Ascend Healthcare, a teen residential facility in Santa Clarita.
I seek to accompany you on your journey of transformation. Together, we will explore your unconscious, heal old wounds and trauma, establish and nurture healthy relationships, unlock your true potential, and shift patterns of thought and behavior to create meaningful change. We will collaborate through empathy, curiosity, and humor to explore blockages and challenges, new paths and possibilities, and the depth of your beingness. My clinical style is rooted in mindfulness-based practices, attachment and psychodynamic theory, and depth psychology, and I take a holistic approach to my work, considering the mind, body & spirit.

Maybe you are a teenager who feels misunderstood by the adults around you. Maybe you are struggling in your relationships and you feel alone. Maybe you have experienced anxiety or depression and do not know where to turn. Maybe you've gone through a loss. At the core of many problems is the lack of feeling truly seen, heard, and understood. We want to feel we matter.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
