If you’re looking for a place to heal, grow, and explore what you want your future to hold, therapy can be a powerful way to reach your goals. Starting such an odyssey of self-discovery takes courage, but it is well worth the effort to make your hopes become realized. I work with a wide range of client issues, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, grief, relationship issues and difficult life transitions.

I specialize in working with young adults in their late teens, 20s, and early 30s. Young adulthood is about discovering who you are through major decisions in your relationships, education, and career. It is a critical time when you establish lifelong habits to optimize health and identify passions that drive and define you. I offer individual psychotherapy, art therapy, or a blend of both. As a queer therapist, I enjoy working with LGBTQ+ clients, including individuals who are questioning their sexual orientation or gender assigned at birth. I also offer EMDR for those interested in intensive trauma work.

Have you had some of these experiences? "Growing up, we were taught that our business had to stay in the family home. In African American families, this is not only a matter of decorum, it is a rule about safety- safety that is contingent on you being less yourself, and therefore, it is also about shame" (Burke 44).  Or are you living in denial about what you went through or experienced often times just to survive and get through life, or because you never were taught how to express and process your emotions? Burke, T. (2021) You are your best thing. New York, NY: Random House Publishing Group.

Hi! I am a bilingual therapist with over 20 years of experience. In 2000, I finished my Counseling education at Arizona State University. For the first few years, I worked in an in-patient mental health facility. Over time, I was more drawn to outpatient work and began starting my own Private Practice in 2006 called Life Transitions Counseling. Recently, I have spent time traveling the world working as a Military Family Life Counselor, aiding in the mental health care of our service members and their family members.

I enjoy working with neurospicy/neurosparkly people, queer people, chronically ill people, and people who simply are ready to dive into what it means to be a human in this world. I believe in the interconnectedness of the body, the mind, and the spirit and will bring it all into our sessions if that is what calls to you. I don't believe in pushing people to disclose if they don't want to. I work within a framework of consent and open-heartedness at all times. I want you to feel safe when you are with me and to learn how to hold that space for yourself as well. Please check out my website at mountainmeadowllc.me for more about me.

Horses have an innate sense of the suffering of their herd. They are hyper-attuned to the needs of others around them. When I work with my horses they are able to pick up on the underlying needs and desires of my clients. They know when you are feeling angry, isolated, or restless. The horses are able to attune to your emotions while I help you to put those feelings into words and do the necessary work to solve life's challenges. Together, we will embark on a journey of self-discovery.

If you're dealing with a significant change in life, whether having a loved one pass, starting a new job, or just adjusting to a new city, dealing with change is my specialty. Having completed coursework for a PhD in Depth Psychology and currently completing a Doctor of Education, I am skilled at working with various issues that I am happy to discuss with you. What sets me apart from others isn't so much the types of issues I work with, but how we work with one another.

I offer teletherapy to clients in California, Nevada, Oregon and Colorado. I offer in-office visits in Sacramento. Sometimes we expect far too much from ourselves. Each client is invited into a space where there is no expectation and where they are free to be themselves, without fear of judgement or misunderstanding. Adults can sometimes struggle to find space to hold compassion for themselves. Couples (and all variants of relationship structure) can also use a nonjudgmental time and space to feel heard, while building tools for communication.

Do you have everyday, ordinary life struggles that you think aren’t ‘big enough’ for therapy? Or maybe you find yourself dealing with more severe issues of anxiety, depression, postpartum, or substance use? Regardless of your starting point it’s okay to admit you can’t do it alone; we were made to be social creatures. As a licensed professional counselor, my goal is to empower you to be the expert of your own life while simultaneously journeying alongside you as we navigate finding solutions together.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
