Whatever struggle is motivating you to start counseling, something inside is knocking. The knock may be feeling depressed, anxious, angry, or overwhelmed. It may be feeling disconnected in relationships and from what is meaningful in your life, a sense of emptiness or lack of purpose. It may be unresolved trauma. To answer that knock means to turn inward, which can be challenging and uncomfortable at times, yet I whole-heartedly believe the life you seek is patiently waiting. The pain you are experiencing is actually an invitation for healing and growth. Answer the knock. When things break down, breakthroughs happen.

Growing up is HARD. You get home after a tiring day at school where you felt invisible. You sat with friends at lunch, but left feeling like they don’t really get you. You open your backpack to loads of homework, when your mom reminds you to work on your college applications. The overwhelm takes over. You grab your phone and start to scroll, which leaves you feeling numb, empty and alone. After a tense family dinner, you go back to your room, feeling unheard and misunderstood. Figuring out who you are and what you want is hard while navigating school, work, friends, family, and relationships. You just wish things were easier.

Life is not always easy. Transitions, such as becoming an adult or becoming a parent, can be welcome changes but can also be hard to manage. We also come across challenges in our day to day life that we may have a hard time coping with. Sometimes these things lead to issues like anxiety, depression, grief, struggles in relationships, or issues with school or work. My background in both Social Work and Child Development gives me a unique, holistic perspective that informs my practice. I particularly enjoy using my background to help both young adults and parents work through the challenges that come with their stages in life.

Couples, Couples. I enjoy working with ALL couples. I have been in over 10,000 conversations during 3+ decades (but this has not made me old.). I team up with you both. BUT... if your other half is not coming, I work with YOU on relationship matters & maybe they will join later. I also offer online Gottman couple assessments & specialize in Emotional Intelligence with comprehensive assessments online as well. I use humor, and directness. No jargon. I do not sit there nodding & smiling like a bobblehead. I speak & ask questions. At the end of our conversation, many clients say, "I never thought about it that way before. Thanks."

Families can find themselves in high conflict, overwhelmed and discontent, having lost the joy of being together but not know why. Some families know why but don't know what to do about it! Some individuals can find themselves feeling unfulfilled, stuck and sad more days than not, while others may feel anxious, worried and self-critical most of the time. Many people have all of this going on at once! If you are looking to improve the communication and calm in your family, or to shut down the self-critical thoughts to feel more confident, I can help.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
