Dr. Robert Reiner is the Executive Director and founder of Behavioral Associates (BA), and has been practicing psychology since 1981. He specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for individuals, couples and families alone or in combination with Biofeedback, Neurofeedback, Virtual Reality Therapy (VRT) and QEEG assessment. Dr. Reiner is a warm, compassionate psychologist that personally meets with each new patient during the initial consultation to assess the patients' individual needs, match them with one of the expert clinicians on staff, and devise a treatment plan. While he views medication as a last resort, psychiatrists are available to prescribe when deemed necessary.

As a therapist I create a safe and non-judgmental space where you will feel validated and supported. From a collaborative and strength-based approach, I am passionate about working with individuals, couples, and families to enrich and deepen their connections to those who matter most. I focus on resolving issues related to breakdowns in communication and life transitions including marriage, separation, illness, loss, pregnancy and the birth of a child. I believe that through therapy, ruptures can be repaired, and couples and families can navigate tumultuous times with greater ease and grace.

I am an NYC-based psychotherapist and psychoanalyst with over 20 years of clinical experience. I trained at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (IPTAR) and am still involved with the organization today. In my opinion, psychodynamic therapy is an essential part of psychological work and can be beneficial for people from all walks of life. I have found that psychodynamic psychotherapy is an effective treatment option for those struggling with overwhelming emotions. One of the benefits of this approach is that it helps to create a safe and trusting relationship, which is important when learning new coping skills.

My guiding principle as a therapist is deep listening without judgment (acknowledgement plus acceptance) so that people can feel the freedom to express themselves, explore their experiences and create authentic connection. I believe that listening is an essential tool in healing and feeling valued. My approach is trauma-informed and client-centered, with an anti-oppression lens. I am committed to the lifelong unlearning of colonial structures that are deeply rooted in mental health, and to holding space for others to unpack how societal and institutional structures have impacted their mental health and wellness.

Hi! I'm Neli Betancourt-Rodriguez. I'm a Christian bilingual (Spanish/English) licensed mental health counselor in New York City. Whatever brought you here, I'm so glad you're here. Your story deserves to be heard, uncovered, and transformed into purpose. Your life matters. My hope is to walk alongside you in the aftermath of what can feel like the weight of the world. Sometimes, that aftermath looks like learning to trust again after abuse, or to feel joy after years of depression and sadness, or to unlearn patterns that no longer serve you. It may be hard to believe freedom is accessible. But here, I know it's possible. . .

I know how difficult and intimidating it can be to find the right therapist...and it is of the utmost importance to me that you feel comfortable, understood, and supported from the very beginning. Whether you are exploring the idea of therapy for the first time, or you're a therapy "veteran," you will appreciate my intuitive, empathic nature, and my ability to connect with you and what you need at this time in your life. I have great success in helping people manage anxiety, build self-esteem, and become more skilled at understanding and handling negative emotions (including sadness, fear, insecurity, loneliness, and anger).

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
