This world can be a painful and confusing place. Whether you’re struggling with men’s issues, ADHD, relationship issues, or a personal challenge, you may be wonder: Can I ever feel good about who I am? Is it even possible for me to be happy? Is it possible to heal from what I've been through? Regardless of your current situation, the answer to all of these questions is “Yes.” Others similarly situated have found a way out, and there is hope for you too. Sometimes a listening heart, a broader perspective, or new insights can help you reframe your understanding of your life. Learn how to treat yourself as if you were a good friend.

Specializing in life transitions, including emerging adulthood, along with ADHD and teen issues.
You're at an age that you thought would have at least some of your dreams come together, instead you're settling for almost getting there. Stuck, trapped, one step forward but two steps back are the feelings you try to push away or ignore. Usually in unhelpful ways. This isn't the the person your younger self thought you would be. The good news is you know you're not done working towards the future you that feels fulfilled.

I have been a therapist since 1996, I founded Shining Through Counseling because I think everyone has a story to tell and needs support on their journey to wellness. I am here to support and you and help you to heal, meet your goals and let your true self shine through. I do this by building a trusting relationship, and working together to address current and past issues or trauma, processing through them, building and strengthening coping skills and supports. I work with individual clients, children, couples, and families.

Therapy can be initially a very stressful undertaking, that may or should initiate change. I like to look at the positives of change and how that makes a person feel better about themselves and their outlook on life, now and in the future. In my 20 plus years of experience as a therapist I have found that the relationship between the client and therapist is most important for this to occur and for real healing to begin. I feel that my calm and excepting demeanor is a good fit for people to begin this process. It should be noted that I do not do marriage or couples therapy as my colleagues are a better fit and I prefer individuals

Making the decision to pursue therapy is a huge step. It’s easy to push things down or avoid them, but making the choice to reach out shows strength. Maybe you’ve never had a safe space to share your true thoughts and feelings, or felt truly heard and understood. Let’s build that together here. My interests include assisting individuals in developing self-esteem and self-concept, as well as healthy and effective relationships with family, friends or partners. I also have experience working with those with anxiety, depression and other mood disorders. I do not work with families or couples.

ADHD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?

You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.

How does treatment for ADHD work?

Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.

Are there specific medications for ADHD?

Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.

How long does treatment for ADHD take?

It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
