Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of assisting clients in the areas of trauma (childhood and/or complex), depression, anxiety, emotional dysregulation, anger management, self-harm, grief/loss, distress from life situations/transition, challenging behavioral problems, substance use, self-esteem, stress management, and interpersonal skills.
I have worked in a variety of settings throughout the years to include public schools, an inpatient psychiatric facility, the criminal justice system, and virtual mental health sessions. Populations I have assisted in their journey to mental health and wellness include children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly; physically handicapped, intellectually disabled, emotionally disturbed, and seriously mentally ill. My life experiences have molded me into a genuinely empathetic clinician who is able to connect with clients and help to empower them as they heal and grow.

My specialties include working with adolescents and adults suffering from addiction, anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, self-esteem, stress, and much more.
Traumatic experiences can and will affect us in various ways. Loneliness, negativity, abandonment, rejection, and our reactions can severely impact our mental health. Ironically, it is often easier to push away people than deal with difficult feelings. Unfortunately, we choose this path by abusing substances, alcohol, and other types of addictions. When we run away from our feelings and challenges, we are not allowing ourselves to heal and recover. Essentially, we are hurting ourselves and others. Together we can work through these difficult experiences and navigate around the painful emotions to feel better and find joy again.

I have spent my entire career working to help make the lives of others better. From working with the victims of Hurricane Katrina to working and serving the homeless in Washington, DC. The majority of my life has been spent in the service of others. I graduated from Liberty University with a master’s in Professional Counseling and a Master of Arts in Human Services Counseling: Addiction and Treatment. I have learned to help effectively and efficiently those suffering from mental illness. I believe in treating the whole person, and sometimes that includes working with their families.

As a substance abuse counselor, I see addiction as a symptom. I work with my clients in identifying and resolving core issues that drive maladaptive behaviors. If there is any question that your use of alcohol or other drugs is contributing to or causing problems in your life, I want to help you in changing those self-defeating patterns.

Due to my background and certifications, I have been able to help individuals and couples with a myriad of behavioral health issues, both related to mental health and substance use problems.
I enjoy working with clients who are engaged in the treatment process and wanting to grow to build a lasting foundation for behavioral health recovery. Whether a person is internally or externally motivated for treatment, I believe that if a person wants to be helped, they can be helped. As a therapist, it is not my place to tell a person what he/she should or should not do. It is my responsibility to use my experience and training to help clients find their paths to personal growth and development to live lives filled with internal peace and commitment to personal values.

I've worked successfully with individuals experiencing depression, grief, anxiety, anger issues, and struggles with addiction and substance dependence.
Achieving “balance” within one’s life can be a challenge. The day-to-day frustrations and stresses build, creating fertile ground for many mental health conditions. The stresses also reduce our capacity to cope and problem-solve as we once did. My approach to therapy is collaborative. You are the expert of you. Let’s use our combined skills to identify your path to “balance.” Taking the step to start therapy can be a daunting. I understand. Lets walk together.

There are so many in today’s world struggling, to be heard, to find hope. In my lifetime I have experienced, traumas, loses and grief. Understanding the significance of events on overall wellness, I want nothing more than to give others the opportunity to find hope, to find a way out of whatever hole they might be in, To strengthen their resiliencies to overcome whatever barrier might be holding them back. People of all ages, cultures, and ways of thinking all have struggles and I offer a safe environment to be heard, and to finally obtain freedom from whatever ails you, be it addiction, trauma, or new adjustments in life.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
