For me it comes down to living POWERFULLY by accepting full responsibility for our lives. In that comes freedom. Freedom from addiction and compulsion. Freedom from self hate. Freedom from toxic relationships. Freedom to "respond" rather than "react". Freedom to live in accordance with our OWN values such that, at the end of the day, we're good with ourselves. I'm inspired by such COURAGE on a regular basis. We've all got "stuff". At some point, the question is, "what're we gonna DO about it?" It's a great privilege to do this work. Note: I am not in a position to provide crisis services.

Kundalini Yoga can be used to address a variety of psychological issues, ranging from depression to addiction.
My therapy style is based on three principles: Awareness, Discovery, and Integration. I approach my clients holistically. My intention is to explore their troubles without judgment or a specific agenda. I believe that the problem always contains the seeds of its own resolution, and I trust my clients to know what is ultimately best for them. My clients do well in therapy when they practice curiosity, patience, and friendliness towards their own troubles. Over the years I have tended to focus on mood disorders, anxiety disorders, addictions, trauma, and relationship issues.

I've worked in substance use treatment facilities and inpatient hospitals.
Substance misuse, trauma, identity concerns, men's issues, depression, anxiety, adjustment issues. These are just a few of the issues I specialize in working with in my practice. I have had 8 plus years working with adolescents and adults in various settings. My approach is a humanistic, client-centered, somatic and trauma focused approach. I am trained in EMDR and Brainspottting. I try and create an environment/therapuetic alliance that is relaxed, humorous yet confrontational and free of therapeutic jargon so that my clients can be authentic.

If you're struggling with feelings of anxiety, depression and/or finding yourself dealing with these issues in unproductive ways such as substance use then feel free to reach out for a consultation.
We all have an inherent need to make sense of our lives. Psychotherapy addresses this by becoming aware of our unconscious (unaware) patterns. Freud coined the term "repetition compulsion" by which we can unknowingly repeat past experiences. In essence, we want to change but cling to what's familiar. Long-term psychotherapy is my preference as it provides the necessary time and safety for these dynamics to emerge and therefore create freedom if desired.

Addiction is often the the solution to our problems until that too becomes a problem.
Change - "Why do I need to change, how can I manage change, but I have always done it this way." Novelist and critic Marcel Proust talks about discovery and "learning to see with new eyes". I am an MFT and CADC II using cognitive behavior techniques to manage thoughts, feelings and behavior in my client centered practice. I believe change is not something to fear but something to embrace. I work with life transitions and the changes it brings to relationships, employment, religious beliefs, life stages and I am certified in Addiction Counseling.

I have spent my career working to help people heal from trauma, addiction, abuse, neglect, and associated familial issues.
Few things in life are as hard as asking for help. This is especially true if you aren't quite sure what to ask for or how to ask. As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I believe that the problems we face are influenced not only by what is happening with us, but also within our relationships with others. Our connections and relationships are important to us and our individual mental and emotional health. So whether I am working with just one person, a couple, or a family, it is not about taking sides, villainizing, victimizing, or blaming. It is about healing, empowering, and recovery.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
