Are you concerned that your substance use is causing some problems for you? Substance use is on a continuum, with abstinence on one end and severe abuse, or addiction, on the other. Historically, approaches to substance use treatment have been binary—you either use or you do not. While this approach is effective for some people, for most it feels restrictive and at times punitive. The goal of therapy is for you to determine—you may want to examine your use, minimize it, work toward ceasing use all together or even maintain positive changes you have already made.

Aging, death, break ups, brain injury, major health diagnosis, addiction, family conflict, and dozens of life's other challenges are accompanied by grief. Grief and loss is part of a universal human experience that, despite it's commonality, is just as difficult every time for every one of us. As much as we'd like for these feelings to just disappear they can cause us to feel overwhelmed and hopeless until we find a way to integrate them, not "get over" them. I offer telehealth visits to adults and older adults in Texas and am accepting new clients.

While I've worked with clients across a broad spectrum of needs and therapeutic goals I have most often found a fit with clients seeking change in their lives in the context of a collaborative relationship in therapy. I emphasize the importance of purpose in a person's life to provide motivation for practical change, leveraging both the internal resources someone already possesses and the potential to develop much more. I want to focus with a client on lifestyle and attention to the wisdom that resides in the mind, body, and spirit as a part of the immense human capacity to grow and change.

Recovery can simultaneously be the most rewarding and demanding part of your life. It can leave you feeling exposed and raw at the end of the day even though your recovery has shown you are resilient. Recovery from alcohol and other substances involves daily hard work and at times can feel monotonous. Anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and other life struggles just seem to add to an already daunting process. The fear of relapsing into old habits and behaviors can be all-consuming and can cloud your reasons for exploring sobriety in the first place.

We all encounter different challenges and stressors throughout the course of our lives. Sometimes those challenges and stressors can be overwhelming and exhausting to tackle solo. I believe that sometimes we aren’t sure what we even need but are certain that something needs to or could be different in our life. I naturally work from a strengths-based and client-centered perspective and feel that collaboration and rapport are key components in the therapeutic process. My goal is to help you heal and flourish in your life.

It's okay to not be okay. It happens to the best of us. The important thing is not to stay there. I like to provide a space where clients feel comfortable processing difficult emotions so they can leave the session feeling a greater sense of resilience, confidence, and happiness. I believe that starting with a strength-based and relational approach and tailoring the sessions to your needs is important to building rapport and trust in the session. I encourage people to be themselves and move towards personal awareness and acceptance.

I work with people, not labels. It’s about you, not a diagnosis. And it’s about me, not a degree. It becomes about us working together for your goals, whatever those are-I can help. We’re so surprised when we feel something but it “doesn’t make sense”. We “should” ourselves & judge. We waste a helluva lot of time doing this. How often have you tried to think yourself out of a feeling? I know!! Me too. Doesn't work. Together we can figure out how & why you think & feel the way you do. You can't think your way out of depression, anxiety, trauma or anything else. You can talk & feel yourself out, though. Here is what I believe.

We all strive to live a good life, but sometimes we feel directionless, hopeless or feel like we're holding ourselves back. Specializing in low self esteem, identity issues, relationship issues, and trauma, I utilize a combination of Internal Family Systems (IFS), Attachment Theory, and EMDR to empower you to be your authentic self. Working towards alignment looks like exploring our thoughts, feelings, and body experiences, and paying attention to where we disconnect.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
