Hi! My name is Mishaal and as a therapist I really focus on creating a space that is safe and full of compassion because most of us have trouble finding spaces like that in our everyday lives. My goal is simply to help people feel better, and my therapy style is collaborative where together we identify issues and come up with solutions. While there are many approaches to therapy, I find the most value in engaging with my clients and being real in sessions. Meaning, I like to ask questions, offer perspectives, teach you tools, and sometimes just sit there with you while you feel a hard emotion.

No one likes being stuck in cycles from events of the past. Adults who grew up with emotionally unavailable parents may experience abandonment or rejection that looks like codependence, anxiety, and depression. You have difficulty trusting in relationships or find yourself drawn to other emotionally unavailable adults. It's a cycle and one that you can't talk your way out of or through. There's a root, and my goal is to help you heal that root so you can see yourself differently and connect with others from a more healthy mindset, thus engaging in healthier relationships.

I have a passion for helping those with dealing with relationship conflict, spiritual trauma, chronic illness, caregiving fatigue, and faith crises. I am also comfortable with working through the many forms that depression, anxiety, loneliness, and grief can take. I am dedicated to meeting you wherever you might be in your life journey, especially in those periods of transition that can prove trying. I believe that we all have the ability to make positive and healthy changes in those difficult places of our lives—sometimes, we just need extra tools and encouragement to help us! You don’t have to walk through these challenges alone.

I work with individuals and couples in the area of broken relationships. So much is determined by the quality of your relationship with self and others. When it isn't going well we tend to isolate and deny or numb it away with distractions, but the opposite is true. Where hurt often comes from relationships, healing happens all the more through relationship. I would even say it's impossible to heal without another along with you. Whether you are an individual struggling with your relationship with yourself or a couple trying to reconnect, I can help you reset, renew and bring healing to those broken places.

Whether you can’t seem to manage your own impulses, anxiety or pain, or someone else’s choices have left you feeling stuck and in pain, it’s often hard to find a single safe person to telI. I want to be a safe place for you, where you feel it’s okay to be who you are. Together we can take a look at which ways of thinking and reacting are helping you reach your goals, and which parts of yourself may have helped you get to where you are but are now not as effective in helping you move forward. As you learn to see your whole story and learn new tools to respond in ways that line up with your true value, healing begins.

Are you stressed about your teen's actions and behaviors? Are you afraid your frequent conflicts with your teen will push him/her further away from you? Has drug and alcohol use became an "unwelcomed guest" in your home and your teen's life? You are not alone. Research states the adolescent development stage can be a difficult time for the adolescent as well as the parent. It is an important and crucial season for you and your teen - a time of significant growth, change and transition in your teen's brain, physical, social, and emotional being.

My approach to therapy is based on getting to know people as individuals, and then tailoring treatment to meet their unique needs. I do not believe in a “one-size-fits-all” approach to treatment. I am also an avid believer in respecting the vulnerability and privacy that are key to developing a productive therapeutic alliance. I collaborate with patients to help them identify their treatment goals, then achieve those goals in the manner that is right for them.

My experience is with the older and elderly populations. I have worked with caregivers and their loved ones with dementia for over 10 years. As we age, we deal with grief, loss, and life events that may change the trajectory of goals and lifelong plans. Aging and life events can cause depression, anxiety, fear, and sometimes conflict within ourselves and others. It is important to process these changes in a healthy and productive way. I enjoy helping clients do the work to assist them in developing the tools and strategies to come to an outcome that they are pleased with.

I help men and women dealing with, "Now what?" You know, when life doesn't go according to plan, which it rarely does. It often sounds something like this: Now what should I do that I feel anxious or depressed? ...that I can't seem to lose this weight? ...that my situation feels hopeless? ...that my past continues to haunt me? ...that I don't feel good about myself? ...that I (or someone I love) drink(s) too much? ...that I struggle with food? ...that my relationship isn't what I hoped for? Now what should I do that I'm questioning how I've spent my life? In other words, "This isn't how it was supposed to be; this wasn't the plan."

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Richardson?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
