You look in the mirror and feel no connection with your reflection. That's not what you're supposed to look like, not who you feel you really are. The way you act around other people is focused on their comfort and expectations, not your authentic self making real connections. Maybe you have to try harder than you'd like to get people to see you as you are, and maybe no matter how hard you try, they still don't see you.

I specialize in working with individual's struggling with substance abuse and not only needing counseling, but substance abuse assessments for the court or court ordered probation programs.
My style of counseling is very person centered, warm and pragmatic. I believe meeting the client where they are, at that particular moment in their life, is so very important. I tell people not to be afraid of change, be afraid of not changing. I have never approached this profession with a mindset that "One size fits all." We all are unique individuals with varied backgrounds, experiences and perspectives, which requires active listening and suspension of judgement or bias.

If your reason for seeking a therapist is for things like - life changes, needing coping skills for anxiety and/or stress, battling an addiction, life or parenting skills, personality disorder, suffocating from shame/guilt, or needing safe place for support.
No matter the reason or issue that has brought you to my profile - hello! There are so many reasons people seek out a therapists. Whatever your reason is and no matter how many times you may have tried to resolve it on your own, I hope you know how strong you are for not giving up! Resilience can be a strength but it doesn't have to be your only armor in your battles. Counseling can provide you more options. A great thing about counseling - it's for everyone because we all have needs and we could all use some support and/or help from time to time!

It is time for you start being the person you were meant to be. There may be many things that prevent you from getting where you want. However, it's time to start prioritizing your own self-care and live your life to its true potential. Our relationships and our self-perceptions can easily become distorted. We must often take a step back to look forward to the next chapter to get the things we want in life.

I work with clients who find themselves repeating the same patterns and cycles, who have tried everything they know to try and have not found relief. My clients come ready to go deep and discover what is and is not serving them so they may make lasting changes. The way you feel today does not have to be the way you feel forever. Sometimes we are unable to see what is standing in our way and in those times, having another perspective, from someone who genuinely wants to see you grow, can help uncover unseen aspects of ourselves and our lives.

There are basic truths of human psychology that most people understand intuitively. We do not fully know ourselves; the things we do not know can cause suffering. There is a benefit to self-awareness. I will support you as you develop your innate capacity to be with your own life, just as it is, and assist as you develop more effective strategies for living joyfully and with compassion for yourself as well as others. As we bring together your sense of yourself in past, present and future states, feelings of organization and coherence develop. Choice is restored.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
