Depression/anxiety and also addiction are two areas that I specialize in.
When I was a young woman, I chose to try counseling as a way of dealing with my problems. I was stuck and didn't know what else to do. Counseling changed my life. As a result, I became a counselor years later. I especially enjoy walking with clients through whatever life issues and challenges they have, whether it's a loss of joy, grief over the death of a loved one, a divorce or simply feeling overwhelmed with daily life. I'm a good listener. Hope you will contact me for an appointment.

Lack of Motivation, Addiction, & Relationship Issues - The 3 most common presenting problems in my practice today. Whether you’re dealing with any combination of the 3, or something else entirely, actualizing your potential is the way forward. I don't believe rehashing past experiences to no end is helpful. While talking about past experiences may be an important part of our work, growth manifests through present integration. Being as honest and direct as possible is the best way to demonstrate how I'm not here to waste your time. If we share this value, my style of therapy may be right for you.

"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results." ADDICTION & DEPENDENCY result from an unconscious refusal to move through the pain of withdrawal (from a chemical, thought-process, behavior, other person, etc.). The behavior gets repeated, accompanied by cycles of disappointment, shame, GRIEF, frustration and isolation. Having experienced this same cycle (more than once) I bring years of education, training, personal recovery experiences and compassion to our therapeutic relationship. My PERSONAL therapeutic process is on-going. I would be honored to help you in yours. EASY? Nope. WORTH IT? Yes!

With a Bachelor’s in Psychology and a Master’s in Counseling, I believe in the work of this field. Whether this includes group therapy, addiction psychoeducation, or pre-marital counseling, it is my honor to walk with you as you seek to recover or grow. Life can be heavy and emotions difficult to regulate. Throughout your journey, I recognize that it can be life-changing to add a non-judgmental support with tools to your team as you work to reach your goals by using your own strengths. Just as hurt and betrayal often take place in relationship, so do healing and change. In a session with me, you matter and you are safe.

I work with a wide range of psychiatric disorders such as personality disorders, anxiety disorder, depressive disorder, somatic pain, trauma, PTSD, and substance abuse.
I view treatment as a safe space where healing can occur through the process of unpeeling multiple layers of mental and emotional patterns (conscious and unconscious), leading individuals to discover their strengths, true potential and authentic self. In this process, one can feel empowered and inspired to integrate all parts of self, even those hidden from the conscious mind. This delicate work is only possible when trust and alliance are established between therapist and client. The principles guiding this work are unconditional acceptance, compassion and non-judgment.

In the face of pain we all have strategies to manage the discomfort, sometimes reacting in ways that feel out of our control. Many of us can experience a punitive, self-judging voice inside our head and disconnection from our body. I believe our symptoms -anxiety, depression, emotional reactivity, struggles with relationships, addiction, and stuck patterns— are our best attempts at self-regulation, adaptations we learned in overwhelming circumstances. These are learned responses that can be unlearned. They're communications from unintegrated/shadow parts of ourselves that can be welcomed as guides (sometimes reluctantly, painfully).

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
