I specialize in substance abuse counseling with young people ages 12 and older, their families, and adults who suffer from alcohol and drug abuse or addiction.
Could alcohol/drug use be a problem for you? Do you have a pattern of use that is consistent in some way? Have you tried to stop, only to find things are getting worse? Do you feel helpless watching a loved one self-destruct before you? Have you tried to talk about the issue only to walk away feeling defeated and confused? Have you come to realize your life is nowhere near where you thought it would be at this time of your life? Do you feel like a stranger in your own house? Do you want peace and a sense of self again? I can help you find both.

I believe in a therapeutic process that revolves around life's changes and the journeys it takes us on. Choosing to change your focus is a powerful way of transforming any situation. Focusing on the positive doesn't mean that we are denying reality or avoiding what isn't working. It simply allows us to work from a grounded place in order to make the most informed decision from a less emotional place of clarity. Within our sessions, the goal is to cultivate a trusting and collaborative therapeutic relationship where an individual can bring their full self into session without any fear.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, (1943), "The Theory of Human Motivation", reads: if a person’s basic needs (food, shelter, physical/mental safety) and social needs (love, belonging, self-worth, sense of purpose) are not fulfilled, that person will experience frustration and will “pivot” on a level of need that appears easiest to satisfy. Which level of need are you "stuck" on? Are you bound by anxious, fearful and mind-binding thoughts? Freedom is a goal that can be attained.

Do you have stress and anxiety related to a pending divorce, infidelity, pornography addiction, drugs/alcohol, or violence? Often these "adult" issues become problematic in households where children are involved. Are your children caught in the middle? Poor grades and oppositional/defiant behaviors can result from differing parenting styles or other conflicts between adults in the home. I understand the difficulty of seeking help in situations where feelings of embarrassment, guilt, anger, fear, or shame are involved, and assist my clients in resolving them.

If you're looking for help, my hope is that I'm able to provide healing, empowerment, and a safe place to be heard. Most of my experience is in working with military, couples, students, and adolescents who struggle with addiction, grief, trauma, parenting, and relationships. I have a sincere passion to just "be" with people and offer support, a new perspective, and possibly even some challenges. I am also EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization, and Reprocessing) trained to work with anxiety, addiction, trauma, and PTSD.

I found my love for counseling in aiding individuals with addiction and their family members find recovery.
Hi! My name is Trista. Whatever journey has brought you to my page, I am so proud of you for being here. A little bit about me: I am married, I have two fur babies who are very spoiled, and I have a slight obsession for plants. Most importantly, I am blessed and honored with the privilege to sit with people in the most vulnerable times in their lives.

Even though mental health has become more of a priority in our society we have to acknowledge how diverse it is and what specific needs/goals an individual has. Anxiety, depression, relational/familial conflict, anger, and addiction are just a few reasons why someone may seek therapy. In addition, longing for personal transformation/growth or even to have an unbiased opinion to help process the many stressors of every day life are also reasons why someone might seek therapy. Having a mental health professional that understands the diversity of your specific needs will ensure you get the most out of the therapeutic process.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
